Two GDCI boys show well

In a recent Sir Isaac
Newton Physics exam
sponsored by the
University of Waterloo,
two G.D.C.I. students
received . excellent
marks.
David Smith, a year 5
student, scored in the 99th
percentile. Out of 4,564
students who wrote the
exam, only 37 had a
higher mark than David.
Although only in year 3,
Paul Manz also did very
well, ranking in the 92nd
percentile. He was 383
out of the 4,564 students
who wrote.
David Smith is ex-
pected to be an Ontario
Scholar (averaging 80
percent over six year 5
subjects) by the end of
the term, and his teacher,
Doug Bundy says he will
probably be offered a
physics scholarship.
However, David is going
to enter the co-operative
engineering program at
the University- of
Waterloo.
Paul will go on to year 4
next September.
G.D.C.I. students also elected a social convener for
their 1979-80 students' council. The candidates,

Goderich Township
Council met in regular
session on May 21 but
prior to the official
meeting, council
members met with the
O.T.E.V.A., `F'. Janecek
and the objectors to
bylaw I, 1979 in an in-
formal meeting in an
attempt to answer
questions.
Twenty ratepayers
from Plan 17 ac-
companied the two ob-
jectors who were present
and the concensus,: of the
meeting was that all the
o?iginal comments would
still go before an O.M.B.
hearing.
At the official meeting,
Jim Morris presented a
development agreement
for the Timms property
on lot 13, Maitland
Concession. 'Council
made one change in this
agreement and moved
that the clerk prepare a
bylaw to permit the
township to sign the
agreement.
A large delegation
attended . the council
meeting from the V.L.A.
subdivision with Pete
Shepherd as spokesman
to request ' road im-
provements, oil, calcium,
etc. Council moved that
the road superintendent
contact Mr. , Shepherd
regarding the complaints
and explain the township
policy ,regarding oil,'
calcium, etc.
Bylaw 4, 1979, a bylaw
to set the rates of taxation
for 1979, was given three
readings and passed.
Menzies and Ross, on
behalf of R. Gilders,
-requested information on
the outlet of the Mon-
tgomery Drain. Council
then passed a motion that
the letter be sent to C.P.
Corbett.
The O.M.B. requested
council's opinion
regarding bylaw. 1, 1979
and the restrictions on
buildings on lot 12.
Council -passed a motion
,saying it is prepared to
pass an amending bylaw
to restrict the buildings
on lot 12, insofar as
distance from the top of
the ravine is concerned.
Prest and Egener, via
the Land Division,
presented an amended
application regarding
Gordon Johnston's land
severance. Council
passed a motion con-
curring,With the original
decision.
Tile drain loans were
requested by Morris J.
Medd for $10,800 on lot 15,
concession six and by
Gertrude Voskamp for
$1,415 on lot seven,
concession four. Council
approved both these
applications.
Council turned down a
request for a grant from
the Ontario Livestock
Protection Association.
Council passed a
motion to negotiate with
Kyles, Kyles and Garratt
regarding the con-
struction of a township
hall.
Building permits were
issued to Gerald Innes
(house addition), James
Cox (storage shed),
Frank Namink (demolish
garage), Frank Namink
(garage), John Ladd
(cabin addition), Dr.
Conlortt (barn addition),
Theresa Sawcher
(building renovations),
David Kilgour (cabin),
and Jan Koene (shed).
Requests for building
permits from J.C. Hin-
dmarsh (log house), R.
Helbing (cottage) and N.
Hedgecock (cottage)
were approved by council
pending Health Unit
approval if necessary.
A request for a building
permit from G. Presz-
cator for a house addition
and one for a barn ad-
dition were held for
proper fee.
Accounts totalling
more than • $10,000 were
ordered paid by council.
Council then adjourned
until June 4.
Johnstone reunion
held at Brookside

• The third annual
reunion of the descen-
dants of James and Mary
Ann Johnstone was held
on May 20, 1979 at
Brookside Public School
near Lucknow.
About 50 registered for
.the occasion. This was
followed by guests
viewing family pictures
and scrapbooks, prior to
a generous smorgasbord
at 12:30.
The program consisted
of a sing -song, a couple of
jumble word puzzles, a
song by Hugh Johnstone.
piano selections by
Elizabeth Wilkins,
bagpipe music by Mr.
'MacDonald.
The executive for 1.979
was introduced by the
president, Myrtle
Johnstone: Vice-
president Eileen Ashton;
secretary, Laura
Campbell; treasurer,
Isabel Hunter. It was
moved and seconded, that
the above executive
remain for 1980.'
Prizes were presented
to the following - person
coming the farthest,
Douglas Guse. The eldest
lady, Mrs. Ethel Clark
(90 years young); the
eldest gentleman, Peter
M. Johnstone (83 years);
closest birthday to May
20, Barry Nivins.
While Jim Hunter took
the children outdoors for
races and games, the 1980
committee was chosen.

Johnstone.
The treasurer's report
was given by Isabel
Hunter followed by the
minutes of last year's
picnic.
After many favourable' -
cotnments concerning the
picnic, it was decided to
hold the fourth reunion at
Brookside School. The
new date will be May 25,
1980.
