HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-06-07, Page 21Rourd `ll' I've heard a lot of gripes about the new sidewalks around The Square. Last summer you couldn't judge it one way or another, I thought, when there was so little finished: This summer I realty noticed it and my first impression was "Wow! Isn't that beautiful!" The way it curves around the corners, dips and rounds out like nice old bricks worn away over the centuries, it gave me a nice feeling. It BELONGS with our fine old buildings around The Square. The little trees and , plantings will feel at home and a real example should be made of anyone who damages these improvements. • Once people have to pay for the damage they do, it will deter a lot of vandals in their joy of breaking things. Very little vandalism is done by one person alone. Most of it is from a dare or because the Joe with the inferior complex tries to show off. The whole gang should be punished in a short, blunt trial - no drawnout court trials, crooked lawyers and lying witnesses, just "%Pay Up". It would bring some meaning back into our "Law and Order" with fear and tespect for our law enforcers. The petty vandalism which makes everyone so angry and frustrated would ease up in a hurry. It would be like putting the strap into .father's hand again - where it is needed. I have no patience with these stupid out- bursts. They should take their frustrations out with a little work, ANY kind of work. They don't have to be paid for everything they do. How will they learn to do anything right if they don't work at , it? You have to learn to do things and aim to do it better than the other fellow. But no, the vandals are' the ones who will not turn their hand at anything. They're lazy, bitter and can't see ahead because they're afraid they will have to get off their fannies and DO something. Hard labour should be in store for them. There • have been, warnings over TV and in the papers about the fly - Martha Rathburn by"nite renovators who come around at this time of year. Driveway pavers who can put in your new driveway- so fast you can't believe it take their Brindley not dog catcher Last week's paper -gave the impression that Henry Brindley's duties as Colborne Township's 1979 dog control officer included dog -catching. In fact, Mr. Brindley is responsible only for isstiing dog licenses and dog tags for 1979. • The Livery Theatre had an open house on Friday evening, June 1 to show recent renovations to the public. The building was once Palley's Livery Stable. Here, Bert McCreath attracts visitors with his bagpipes. Conestoga College of Applied Arts and Technology We've got ,-. I to share. money and go. In a few weeks the drive has many sunken spots, the weeds are growing thru it and you're not happy. In the first place you didn't tell them you didn't want weeds conning thru so they did not use weed killer before they star- ted -but someone should have told you that you should have a contract which states how thick the paving should be - normal is at least two inches - compacted. You should have three 0 estimates before you agree on the price. You have to think about all the things - that should be done - list them - in- cluding the clean up. Oh, tl}ere is so much we should know - and the salesmen they send ahead are such good, fast talkers. that you can be involved before you know it. We know we have good contractors in our area who could do these jobs such as paving, roofing and sjding but these fellows say "we are ready to do it, now" and so you give in. Afterwards, you realize you've paid too much for an inferior job. What to do about it - Well, I believe in this week's paper, -se em ee1um.,s •will be used to give you information you need to have a contract with the jobber that is legal and binding and if the job isn't done right, you won't have paid them off and you can ma4Ce them finish the job properly.
