The Club's- new Com- modore, Ken Dawson, sailing in his Abbott 22, the . Satin Doll, captured the trophy, with Ralph Smith in. a Tanzer 22 coming second. Tied for third were 'Sam James and Lynn Meyers. The Club held an opening barbecue down at - Snug Harbour last Saturday evening • that was well attended, and we enjoyed a fun evening of eating, sailing and practising our. "man overboard" -drills -(or was it "glass overboard"?) Most of us hope the non- existent social committee will plan another.,of these barbecue events. In the first Spring Series race held on Sunday, things started out in great fashion; With beautiful' 'breezes and sunny skies. However, the breezes soon died, and the sun got a bit too bright for some of us! Nevertheless, several boats managed to hang in and finish the race. Here are the results: In the Dinghy class, Dave Parsons finished first, Dave Smith second, and Mark Taylor third. In the M.O.R.C.. class, Dick Robarts' boat, skippered by Paul Parsons finished far ahead of the field. The McGill boat, skippered by our newcomer, Jim Baird, came in . second, nudging out Sam James who finished a very close third. Ken Dawson was• the only other boat for finish in this class. In, the___PHRF. ,class, which at the pregent includes only the two Solings, Lynn Meyers hung in to finish slightly more than a minut3 ahead of Bruce Thomson. Prospective Sail Club members are reminded that membership fees are past due, and should be mailed to Box 202, Goderich. We look for- ward to seeing you down at the harbour! (photo by Dave Muffitt) Hikers trek from Benmiller to Auburn Perfect weather last Sunday brought out twenty-one .hikers in- - clui4ing two little girls, on an organized outing of the Maitland Trail Association. We all gathered at the river bank east of Ben - miller and walked north to Auburn. With all the twists and turns, ups and downs, it was .reckoned we covered aboilt seven miles. There were some beautiful look -out spots where you could con- template brQad views of the mighty Maitland. A leafy bush after the hot . sun was welcome and as we wound our way through the soft shady. trail we . discovered, among other. things, a huge (3') Jack -in -the - growing in its natural habitat with years of° leaf mold for compost. We were too early for the bright cardinal flow trs and of course the trilliums were over, but yerllow and purple violets were still peeping out here and there. Brushing our nostrils was the tangy, intangible smell of. wild bergamot, mint and thyme, intermingled with the scent of pine needles as we passed over -their soft springy carpet. Towards the end of the hike, we were tempted to splash around in the river, but contented ourselves' with wetting our hands and faces. A 'walk to awaken all our senses!
