Church -
Recently, in reading
the London Free Press, I
came across a report on
an interview at which the
Archbishop of Can-
terbury, Donald Coggan,
allegedly said that
"continuing discussions
concerning church
unification will not mean
one church's submission
to another. What it will
mean is 'a unity of
worship and goapel that
will aid in the
evangelization of the
world. You don't talk of
submission, you talk of
living together in love
and harmony."
Though I cannot claim
to know the Archbishop
personally, I do sense
some of the pain and
longing in his remakrs.
Actually the, problem of
church unity has been A
problem for the church of
Jesus Christ even long
before the Apostle Paul
faced off against Cephas
(Peter) in that great
conflict of the early
church over eating with
the uncircumcised. •
There •have always
been different parties and
emphases within the
church. Some of these
have brought grave
struggles and much pain
deep into her bosom.

the Protestant Refor-
mation was the cause of

A significant and
memorable religious
event took place over the
weekend in Goderich
when the people of St.
Peter's Parish com-
memorated the 50th
anniversary of the
priestly ordination of the
Most Reverend T.J.
McCarthy, retired Bishop
of St. Catharines.
Bishop McCarthy, a
native of Goderich,
returned to his home
parish here to confirm 29
St. Mary's students, two
high school students and
two adults at the 11 a.m.
mass on Sunday. On
Sunday evening he at-
tended an anniversary
dinner in his honor at St.
Peter's Parish Hall.
At the dinner, which
was well attended by
parishionners, Bishop
McCarthy cut his an-
niversary cake. Master of
ceremonies, Judge F.G.
Carter, read greetings
from Bishop Sherlock. -
Greetings were also
delivered from Mayor
Harry Worsell on behalf
of the town; Sister
Yvonne on behalf of the
Sisters of St. Joseph; the
Reverend John Wood on
behalf of the . Goderich
Ministerial Association;
'Vincent Young on behalf
of the Huron Perth
Roman Catholic School
Board; and Warren.
Robinson on behalf of the
Goderich District
Collegiate.
Several area priests
and some former
classmates of Bishop
McCarthy were present
at the dinner. Father
. Fred Colli, the last priest
of St. Catharinesto be
ordained by ' Bishop
McCarthy before his
retirement, was present
and spoke several words
of praise, calling the
Bishop an inspiration to
all priests.
A special guest at the
dinner was Rev. Msgr.
A.P. Mahoney, P.H., V.G.
Msgr. Mahoney'
reached his 90th birthday
this year He was or-
dained in 1914, the year
the first World War broke
out. He has spent 36 years
as the rector of St.
Peter's Seminary in
London and once taught
Bishop McCarthy as well
as working along side
him. In his address he
called the Bishop "a very
model priest"; "one of
the greatest students we
ever produced in St.
Peter's Seminary"; "an
encyclopedia of
knowledge"; and "a
friend to all".
In , response to all the
greetings received,
Bishop McCarthy said he
was happy to be back in
Goderich and to see so
•many friends. He men-
tioned that he had taught
together with Father A.F.
Loebach, pastor of St.
Peter's, for a number of
years. He wished the
parish a prosperous
future.
Bishop McCarthy was
born in Goderich in 1905,
the son of the late Captain
D.P. and Mrs. McCarthy.
His sister, Helen
McCarthy, still resides in
Goderich. A brother,
Captain Frank McCar-
thy, is deceased.
Bishop McCarthy at-
tended St. Peter's School
and Goderich Collegiate.
He then continued his
education at Assumption
College in Windsor and
St. Peter's Seminary in
London. In 1925 he
became the first
graduate of the Goderich
Collegiate to receive his
Bachelor of . Arts degree
from the University of
Western Ontario.
There were only about
500 students, including
those in summer school,
at Western when he at-
•
tended and there were
only about 40 in his
graduating class.
"You knew everybody
then," he recalls.
Bishop McCarthy was
later to receive his
Masters degree and an
LL.D. from Western.
\University.
He was ordained by the
late Most Reverend J.J.
McNally at St. Peter's
Cathedral in London in
1929. He received his
Doctor of Theology
degree summa cum laude
from the Angelicum
University in Rome
which he attended from
1929 to 1931.
He served as assistant
priest in St. Peter's
Cathedral parish, Lon-
don, and as an ad-
ministrator at All Saints
parish, Strathroy.
He was attatched to the
staff at St. Peter's
Seminary from 1933 to
1955. He served as vice -
rector •and registrar
there. Twenty-five years
ago he was named a
Domestic Prelate of the
Roman Catholic Church
with the rank of Mon-
signor.
In 1954 he was also
appointed dean of Kings
College -in London which
was just starting up at
that time. Then in 1955 he
was appointed Bishop of
Nelson, B.C.
In 1958 he was ap-
pointed the first Bishop of
St: Catharines and
returned from B.C. to
organize ,,the new diocese
there.
He retired in July of
last year and presently
lives in a Clergy
Retirement • Home in
Dunville.

your

gainst disease.
Diseases like polio, diphtheria, tetanus
and whooping cough are as much of a
threat to your child's health today as
they were years ago. They're very conta-
gious and can cause serious illness or
even death. It's up to you to protect your
child against them, and we can help you.
The Ontario Ministry of Health
provides vaccines to immunize children
against polio, diphtheria, whooping
cough, tetanus, measles, mumps and
rubella (German measles).
These vaccines are free, and your
Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHI)
pays a fee to the doctor for administering
them to your child.
If you have children 2 months or over,
make sure they're protected. Take them
Ontario
to your family physician now, or have
them immunized by your local health
unit. And while you're there, find out if
you need a booster shot yourself.
It takes more than one visit to have
your child immunized completely. To
help you remember when to take your
child back to the doctor we've prepared a
handypamphlet, It will tell you which
diseases your children should be
immunized against and at what ages.
