On Wednesday, May 16 at 4 p.m. there was a Nutrition Workshop at St. Joseph's led by Cathy Thomson from the Huron County Health Unit in Goderich: hear stories of kings and queens, of beautiful princesses and handsome princes. The young child quickly assimilates these ageless moral lessons of basic goodress which conquers evil. Our Canadian folk tales are rather unique because they have as their central focus, the animal and Canada's native peoples. In How Summer Came to Canada by William Toye, the seasons are made to happen in a beaitiful sequence of pictures featuring scenes of icy desolation and sunny flowering greenness. The Loon's Necklace by the same author recounts the heroic attempts of the loon in his efforts to spare an aging father from blindness and an ugly witch. The chipmunk saves a tribe of Indians and changes his whole ap- pearance in How the Chipmunk Got Its Stripes by Nancy Cleaver. A clever princess tricks the king's son in The Princess of Tombaso by Frank Newfeld. Mary Alice Downie also adapts folk tales from French Canada in The Witch of the North. ' The Indians told stories to explain how their world was made; they told stories to preserve their 'history for them- selves and their children; they told stories because there were always those who wanted to listen. Eleven stories 'retold in Song of the Forest by Isabel Barclay are all about birds and animals and best enjoyed heard aloud. The Day Tu•k•Boca.me a, Hunter by Ronald Melzac features witches, wild beasts arid courageous deeds of Eskimos. James Houston tells of Kiviok's long, dangerous search for'his lost family that takes hia far to the south and across a mighty ocean, there to confront the raven in a life -and -death struggle. Kiviok's Magic Journey will provide all readers and listeners with a memorable experience. We will be giving both boys' and girls' games scores following the games. The junior girls have started their intramural softball garner. They got off to a roaring beginning on May 9 with the Yankees and Dodgei's playing a game of three - pitch. The Yankees won that game 8 - 2. Thursday's game attracted a lot of spectators who saw the Blue Jays win a close game with a final score of 5 - 4. Because we play 3 pitch, the girls all had a chance at bat. Mr. Scott's 7 - 8 class Aaron Weir's eyes widened as Constable Gerry Gaeler of Mount Forest presented him with a certificate after completing a test ride through the safety village. More than 700 children tested their knowledge of the rules of the road in the Police Week display.
