Stewart Smith as Jesus Christ.. voice"emotionally wrenching"
Blind to vote in secret
Blind voters will be
able to cast secret ballots
for the fiist time in a
federal general election
when Canadians go to the
polls May 22nd.
This is made possible.
by a template that fits
over.. the ballot, per-
mitting the blind elector,
or one with very poor
eyesight,- to mark the
ballot without assistance.
The system results
from discussions held last
year between the officials
of the Canadian National
Institute for the Blind
_ and
the Chief Electoral
Officer, Jean -Marc
Hamel.
The CNIB estimates
there are some 33,000
blind persons in Canada
who are eligible to vote in
the federal election.
The Canada Elections
Act previously permitted
the blind and other
physically incapacitated
persons to receive
assistance in voting,
either from• a friend or
from the Deputy
Returning Officer. This
privilege is still in force,
The new procedure
provides an option:
When a blind voter
wishes to exercise the
option, the Deputy
Returning Officer will'
place the ballot under the
template. The circles
opposite the names of
candidates on the ballot

are' aligned with cut-out
circles on the template.
The voter, if he so wishes,
may obtain the order of
the names on the ballot
from the Deputy
Returning Officer.
The template was used
in last fall's federal b'y-
elections, and has been
adopted for 'use in'
provincial elections by
Alberta and British
Columbia. Ontariohas
implemented a slightly
different process, but one
designed for the same
objective -- 'to allow blind
voters to cast ballots in
secret without help from •
others.

Once again, G.D.C.1.
has presented Goderich
with a first class musical
production. Opening
Thursday, May 10 it
played to an audience of
161:
'Godspell" is a musical
based upon the gospel
according to St, Matthew,
Its script calls for heavy
cast interpretation,
improvisation, and above
all, sensitivity.
The cast's presentation
of the music was
adequate, considering the
usual high school
auditorium accoustics. It
featured a few out-
standing numbers.
Donnybrook
ladies meet
The May meeting of
Donnybrook U.C.W. met
at the home of Mrs.
Edward Robinson > on
Tuesday evening, May 8
with ten members

Mrs. H. Jefferson
opened the meeting with
a reading on "Mothers".
The hymn, Happy the
Home When God is

by the Lord's Prayer said
in unison. Mrs. Luba
Weber gave a Mother's
Prayer. Mrs. H. Jef-
ferson gave a reading bn
Mother's Love, followed
by a poem, Mother's Day
by Luba Weber. Mother's
Buying Love was given
by Mrs. H. Jefferson. The

an Evening Blessing, was
sung.
Mr's. H. Jefferson took
the business part of the

Therers more to buying
or selling a car
than you think.
When you're buying or selling a car
privately, a handshake and bill of sale
doesn't mean the deal is complete.
If you're the seller, it's in your
best interest to make sure the change
of ownership has been registered
properly with the Ministry of Trans-
portation and Communications.
If it hasn't, all parking tickets auto-
matically go to you. If you ignore
them you could be subject to arrest
for failure to pay fines. You could
also find yourself involved in a civil
suit if the vehicle is in an accident
after the sale.
If you're the buyer, it's also in your
best interest to make sure the change
of ownership has been registered.
Both buyer and seller should visit a
Ministry of Transportation and
Communications licence -issuing office
and transfer the ownership in person.

The exceptional solo in
the first act was "All
Good Gifts", sung by
Karen Melady. Karen's
voice was the clearest
and strongest of the cast.
The ,vaudville duet
featuring Jesus and
Judas, played by Stewart
Smith and Kevin Bundy
respectively, should have
been a highlight of Act I.
Instead, it was com-
pletely destroyed by the
inaudible voice of Kevin
Bundy. The dancing
wasn't bad, though.
In Act 1I, the music
improved considerably.
Sexy Lucia Zmekhol, an
exchange student from
Brazil, teased the male
spectators and
thoroughly enjoyed
herself in the burlesque
number, "Turn Back Oh
Man",
Stewart Smith's voice
in "On the Willows" was
particularily emotionally
wrenching during his
climactic crucifixtion on
the cross.
. `Emotionally wren-
ching' can also he used to
describe the acting in
"Godspell". It was ap-
parent that every

member of the cast was
deeply touched by the
.play.
The parts of Jesus and
John the Baptist Judas
were well -cast by
director Philip McMillan.
Slight, handsome Stewart
Smith's° pri,stience on
stage dominated the play,
and he interpreted Christ
in a sensitive, beautiful
fashion.
Kevin Bundy had a
difficult task portraying
both John the Baptist and
Judas (he also played
David). „ His betrayal
scene as Judas was
especially piercing.
' Several people in the
audience wiped tears
'away during the
beautiful, sad, wordless
good-byes Jesus shared
with his apostles after the
Last Supper.
All in all, the produc-
tion was professional. A
classy touch was added
by the display of
Shakespearean Festival
costume designs.,
In the program Debbie
Shaddick, who played
Robin, said that the
hugging was her
favourite part. It was
everybody's.
