Vandais are - N ^
_
Vandais have been at it again in Goderich.
Every year there is an outbreak of vandalism
that really staggers the mind of the average law
abiding citizen. Not that vandalism is a seasonal
thing by any means. Vandals are vvitb^yooietyyear
couod, in every corner of the giobe. Jist ask some
Gderich merchants about vandalism and vandais.
This newspaper has written reams of copy
throughout the years about vandais. These society
misfits have been the brunt of some rather heavy
editorials, in which vandals have been whipped
with words, cajoled and ridiculed. Nothing works.
The situation hasnt improved. Vandais either don't
read or don't heed.
The reason is simple. The persons who vandalise
parks and personal property and historically
significant or exceptionally beautiful tbiugs, are
legion. They come from nowhere for a night or two
of adventure and they fade away just as
mysteriously. 8tbernvickly come to take their
place, and whether they are old or young, they are
alt temporarity immune to any pang of conscience,
any shred of decency, any sense ofrightor wrong.
Vandals aren't necessarily necessarily bad people. But they
are misguided people, unhappy people, unfullfilled
people, insensitive people.
And they are sick people, too. Too sick to know
they are s.ick.
What's the answer?
Who knows? Perhaps a c\uqec watch by skilled
law enforcement officers who can spot
troublemakers a mile away. Perhaps greater
courage on the part of indivIdoal citizens who
happen to witness acts of violence,to name names.
Perhaps a closer Iiaison between the police and the
citizens. Perhaps renewed efforts to impress upon
parents in the community, the importance of
teaching their children respect for the Iife and the
property of others. Perhaps demonstration punish-
rurntforvandulucaugbtiutbeant....liberostoriog
in a very public way the damage that was done in
the shadows. Like lobbying for stiffer penalties for
convicted vandals.
Vandalism is senseless and vandals are stupid.
Surely there is some way to make vandalism too

God lufrom ~ yy AM. news ~ ~= & G.
It was reassuring this week to hear from Dr.
Richard Tretevan, radiologist at Alexandra Marine
and General Hospital., that the Xray equipnient at
the hospital is among the safest equipment it is
possible to have in this modern age.
The Xray equipment at AM&G is new, as most
persons who are interested in the hospital will
recall. Because that is so, it operates at the highest
performance possible and offers the greatest
possible rotection to the patients.
News recently of harmfoda`aotu of. Xray
rudiub
oin the past, and certain -proven incidents
of cancer as a romuit, no doubt .,had many local
residents wondering about the equipment at
AM&G.
While Goderich and area residents can_ take
comfortin the knowledge that ]{ruyuguipnnut at

d'nger to patients, it is good to remember that any
monounto[rudibduo can be a health hazard under
the proper circumstances. Inordinately frequent
Xrays or careless examinations can be a threat to
the well-being of atients anywhere.
Butauandacdour*bigb—.und Xray departments

If you wouldn't do it at home don't do it in the
park. '
If you don't throw the wrapping from your
chocolate bur,,,tbebox your pizza came in or the
part of your sandwich you don't like on the floor of
your kitchen why do you throw it on the ground in
the park.
Every day of the summer members of the town's
parks department spend two to threehours picking
up after people using town parks. The hours spent
picking up litter amounts tohiring. one worker full
time.
'
Commissioner f works Ken Hunter said the town
does not hire someone just to pick up litter but
explained that the hours each week devoted to
cleaning up the town is the equivalent of one" em-
ployee.
Much of the litter is nothing short of
thoughtlessness on the part of park users. Hunter
said he has watched people sit on park benches wih
li.tter containers at one end ofthem and the people
ignore the containers and throw the garbage on the
ground.
Members of the parks crew say muchof the litter
is the result of people put -Chasing fast food and
eating it in the Park. Boxes and wrappings from
chicken, pizzas, submarines, hot dogs and candy
adorn the tawns of parks and the beaches each day.
If residents of Goderich using the town's natural
settings for snacks would just be a little more
concerned about litter those 40 man hours a week

Dear Editor:
Awhile back there was
a picture in the Signal -
Star of some of the
containers people were
using to put their refuse
in for the sanitation pick-
up. l, for one, do not
blame them for using
beat up containcrs as the
garbage men just have no
respect for the towns
people's proerty.
We bought two new
cans last fall and you
would think they were
twenty -years old. One lid
is missing and the other is
ready for the trash. -

'
Since there is now no
spring refuse picb'up, we
have been told to put
everything out with the
regular yicb'up, l did so
last week and l did put
most of my branches and
twigs in a container but
had a few large ones and
just laid them on the
ground. They were !eft
behind., One man could
have picked them up in
one arm.
Another complaint l
have and I'rn sure there
are other people who will
agree with one, is the
sloppy way the men
dump your cans. Just
about every week it takes
me another 10 minutes. to
pick up the' garbage that
is left behind on the lawn
and the side of the road.
I would appreciate it if
someone from the town
council or the mayor
would speak to the
sanitation men about this
situation. It would be
very much approciutcd.
Yours truly,
Mrs. Roger Kenyon

Dear Editor,
A bare minimum of
food, clothing; shelter
and other necessities
must be providedioocdcc
to continue to live.
Anything produced over
and above this level of
oubSiutcoce can be
considered profit.
Profit can be used by
those who control it in
any way thought best.
Every economic system
proposed deals with
profit which represents
capital. Some argue that
there is no capital in-
volved in collectivist
economies' such as to be
found in the Soviet Union,
or China. Such a surmise
is incorrect!
In collectivist societies,
all profit is controlled by
members of a single
political group. In
competitive nooioty, the
individual can par-
ticipate in the creation
and use of profit — the
more who participate —
the better!
When people take a
pragmatic approach to
economic problems, alt is
well! When they take a
"mystical" approach,
beware.
