Germans tie
United on
late goal
Two Goderich United
Soccer teams made t
season debut in the
London and District
Soccer League Saturday
with a doubleheader at
Agriculture Park.
The United B team
went down to defeat in
their first contest as they
were blanked by
Ridgetown 3-0.
The Goderich A team
put out a good effort and
only a late goal by
German Canadians
salvaged a 2-2 tie against
the senior Goderich
team.
Harold Refflinghaus
put Goderich into a 1-0
lead with a goal early in
the first half but the
German Canadians

Hel-mut Krohmermanaged to slip between these two Ridgetown
players to break up an attack on the Goderich goal Saturday in the
Goderich United B team opener played in Goderich. United played
ragged defence for much of the first half turning back numerous

evened the score with a

the half.
Goderich again took the
lead in the second half on
a goal by Rolf Gottschalk
but the Canadians forced
a tie with a goal in the
final two minutes of the
second half. •
The A team will be in
action Saturday against
United in St. Georges and
on Sunday May 13,
Goderich B will play
Delhi B in Delhi.
The teams will return
to the friendly confines of
Agriculture Park on
Saturday, May 19 when
Goderich B will play St.
Bartolomeo at 6 p.m. and
United A will play the
White Eagles at 8 p.m.
Vikings win
soccer openers
The GDCI Viking
senior and junior soccer
teams recorded victories
in their opening games of
the Huron -Perth season
Monday.
The senior Vikings
recorded a 2-0 win over
the South Huron Panthers
of Exeter with Eric
Mitchell and Randy Little
scoring for Goderich.
In the junior game
Goderich routed South
Huron 5-1. Mike Wedlock
led the attack with two
attacks clinging to a scoreless tie. Eventually United's lack of of-
fence caught up to them and Ridgetown scored three times to win

Slowpitch league begins season
The Goderich Men's
Slowpitch League will
begin its third year of
play with the opening of
the league schedule,
Sunday, May 13.
Chess club
honors champs
The Goderich Chess
Club wound up it's
seventh season with the
hangttet last Wednesday.
The Club enjoyed a very
successful season gland is
looking forward to
another such year next
year.

MacDonald defeated
Louis Stadelmann in the
finals in two games to
-win his seventh straight
title.
In Level 2 Doug
The Goderich Chess Club honored Individuals for
their season performance. at theclub's annual
banquet last week. The winners included Larry
Gower, most improved player and Mike Morlarity
who pi -eked up the Level 4 trophy for his brother
Owen. The back row includes Charlie MacDonald,
Level 1 champ and club master; Steve Hammill,
Level 3 winner and Doug Brindley, Level 2 champ.

Industrial league begins
season play this Sunday
The Goderich
Industrial Fastball
League woll opera the 1979
season this Sunday with
five league games at
Agriculture Park.
The league will again
feature 10 teams in two
division format. The
Maitland Division in-
cludes French, Canada
Company, Ziebart,'
Lakeport Steel and Green
and Parent. McGees,
Fishers, Gords Sports,
Little"Bowl and Graham
Electric make up the
Dunlop Division.
Each team will play 22
games in the season,
playing the five teams in
the other twice and the
four teams in their
respective division three
times.
The league teams will
be bolstered this year by
64 players that were in
the player entry draft. At
least half of those players
in the draft were new
-entries to the league)
The top four teams in
each division will enter
the playoffs that will
begin by mid-September.
Also the top four teams in
the league after 18 games
will receive an invitation
to the labor ,Day weekend
tournament in Goderich.
Last season Gords
Sports rose out of relative
obscurity in the Dunlop
Division to win the league
title
Company.
The season begins at
Agriculture Park this
Sunday at 2 p.m. with
Fisher playing Little
Bowl. Other opening day
games include McGees
against Graham Electric
at 3 p.m.; Gords Sports
will battle French at 5
p.m.; Canada Company
plays Ziebart at 6.30 p.m.
and Lakeport Steel is up
against Green and Parent
in the final game at 8 p.m.

The slowpitch league
was organized in the
summer of 1977 and seven
teams operated in the
initial season. Last
season the•league grew to
10 teams and an ex-
panded schedule.
This year the league
expanded to 14 teams in
two divisions. The Huron
Division consists of
Stothers, Meneset Park,
Denomme, Or'phans,
Teachers, Research and
a,
Development and
Carlow. Signal -Star,
Local 1863, Firemen,
Coyotes, Champion
Office, Oldtimers and
Tickers • make up the
Bluewater Division.
Each team in the
league will play 19 games
in the regualr schedule,
playing two games.
against the six teams in
-their own division- and
one game against each.

Brindley capped off a fine
season to win by
defeating Bob Fitzjames
in two games.
In Level' 3, Steve
Hammill took three•
games to beat Kirk
Lyndon with two wins and
a draw.
In the Fourth Level
Owen Moriarty took the
honors in his first year in
the club by defeating Tim
Reid in two games.
"The Most • Improved
Player was Larry Gower.
This is the second time
Larry hps won this
award.
Girls needed
for Twp. teams
The Goderich Township
recreation committee is
having difficulty in
completing rosters for
girls softball teams.
Registration for
township softball and T -
ball teams was held last
Saturday but there was a
noticeable lack of entries
for girls teams. The
township would like to
form teams and any girls
interested can call Art
Bell, Del Schloendorf or
Pat Rivett.
The committee also
hopes to set up four teams
in a' 7' -hall house league,
the first time such a
program has been offered
by the township. The T -
hall teams will not play
out of town and all games
will he played at
Halmesville School one
night per ween.
Children who have
registered for T -ball will
he contacted at a later
date about the schedule
and times.
Ladies
open
season
The Ladies Huron
Softball League opened
their 1979 schedule
Tuesday with a single
game.
In the,opening game of
the season the Goderich
Sailorettes rallied for a
20-16 win over the
Goderich Superstars.
The league features
eight teams and games
are played at St, Marys
and. Victoria Schools on
Tuesday and Thursday
evenings.
The defence was all around but not much help to goaltender Carl Moller in this
corner kick in United's home opener Saturday. Goderich hosted Ridgetown in
their season premiere and held off a strong Ridgetown attack in the first half but
gave up three goals in the second, losing the mate 3-0. United's home game will
