Although the plant is meeting government regulations, everyone working- there is exposed to potentially dangerous fumes and faces per- manent lung damage, the •docto} explained. He predicted that industrial lung caner will be a major health problem in 20 years. Farmers too face conditions that cause lung disease, including "farmer's lung" from mold on hay which can lead to permanent lung scarring with continued exposure. Dr. Wood described another patient who worked in a large turkey barn and experienced shortness of breath and wheezing after four or five hours in the barn. Either improving Bill Kinahan of Lucknow, centre, was named president of 'the Huron Perth Lung Association at the group's annual meeting in Stratford last week. He succeeds May Dodds of Stratford, left. Beside Mr. Kinahan is Edith Fisher of Mitchell, the new first vice-president and Beryl Dunsmore of Harmony, right, is the Lung Association's executive director. (Expositor photo) way to ' prevent work related lung disease the doctor said. "And it's very hard to get people to stop work," he said. For example the woman who developed lung - cancer from -her work spraying lacquer' was putting two children through university and needed the job, Dr. Wood explained. VIRULENT BRAND He called cancer associated with industry' "an even more virulent kind than that associated with, smoking." The average survival time after diagnosis is six months. Usually there's no surgery possible and cancer drugs and radiotherapy can't prolong life much more than • a year after diagnosis. Cancer of the lung is on the most rapid 'increase in Dr. Wood's practice, while the general pattern of other lung disease is constant. The doctor, who also teaches medical students, says asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema patients make up the rest of his practise. • Asthma patients have a much greater -2 -hope of keeping their condition under control now than 10 or 20 years ago, Dr. Wood said. Asthmatics tend to be richer- and more in- telligent than the general population and often have a family history of the disease or of allergies. Asthma usually shows up before age 14 but Dr. Wood said he's had patients develop it as late as age 75. Very few asth- matics he sees are severe enough to be admitted to hospital; the doctor said, while five years ago he admitted at least one a week. 1 T PAYS TO SH' % Ais BuTTER......, TARTS SAVE 60° 9 12 LITRE BOX 49 TIDE • SAVE'1.00 Regular GROUND . 49 BEEF Limit 5 lbs. Emphysema, too, is usually a disease of smokers, Dr. Wood said: A cold causes an em- physema sufferer "great distress" and can lead to respiratory failure. "I see one regularly about every two weeks and they do very, very badly...Eventually there's not much we can do medically," he told the group. NEW PRESIDENT The annual meeting elected William Kinahan of Lucknow the association's new president. He succeeds May Dodds of Stratford. Although the - –Lung Association's Christmas Seal Fund raised $46,045.74 in 1979, up about one per cent frorri last year, bequests and memorials were down somewhat, making the total income $51,642.52 as opposed to $54,240.69 in 1976. Cancer car in Huron in May The Industrial Cancer Education Service of'the Ontario Division of the Canadian Cancer Society is one of the strongest arms of cancer education and information in Ontario. It takes its educational program to the province's industries and aims at breaking down fears and misconceptions about cancer and motivating workers to approach their family doctor. The white car with navy-blue lettering and its Canadian Cancer Society registered nurse behind the wheel will be visiting Huron County during May and June 1979. The nurse will give an informative presen- tation about cancer through a film and a brief talk and by handing out literature. Private interviews for those that desire them may be arranged at the place of work after the film showing. Last year, the Industrial Cancer Education Service's six registered nurses located throughout the province visited 410 firms, talked AR WEIGHT WATCHER "Midnight Snacker" thinks she's beyond our help.
