Powells speak to U.C. W. on mission boat
Mr. and Mrs. F. Powell
of Clinton were guests at
the Easter meeting of the
North Street U.C.W. in
the church parlour at 8
p.m. on Wednesday, April
11.
In the summer of 1978
Mr. and Mrs. Powell
enjoyed a cruise on the
Robert Crosby, the
United Church West
Coast mission,boat.
In 1847, the Rev.
Thomas Crosby of
Woodstock, who wanted a
different kind of
ministry, went to the
West Coast where he
visited isolated places
using a rowboat and
Indian guides. Ten years
later, he was given a
larger boat, the first
Thomas Crosby, to
continue his missionary
work.
The mission boat used
at present is the fourth
Robert Crosby which has
more than 50 ports of call
along the beautiful Inside
Passage.
While her husband
showed slides of the
beautiful and rugged
scenery and of the .in-
teresting people they had
met, Mrs. Powell told the
story of an unusual and
exciting holiday. In
closing, Mrs. Powell
mentioned that seven
blocks of time have been
arranged for this sum-
mer when eight people
can join the Robert
Crosby on its regular
cruise.
The guests were in-
troduced by Mrs. S.
Mcllwain and thanked by
Mrs. R. Alton.
The Reverend Ralph
King was also a welcome
visitor and spoke
regarding the Resource
Centre in North Street
United Church.
This resource centre
has been provided
through bequests and
memorial gifts and has
been organized and set up
mostly through the
minister's efforts.
Members of the U.C.W.
were given sheets of
paper outlining materials
available with their
location in the centre. As
well as books and
periodicals, audio-visual
hardware such as a film
strip projector, overhead
projector, overhead
transparency sets,
filmstrip kits and
cassettes may be
borrowed for programs
or for use in the church
school and youth groups.
The president, Mrs. H.
Knisley, thanked Rev.
King for taking time to
prepare and explain this
helpful information.
A very impressive
worship service was
given by several mem-
bers of the Cfare
McGowan Unit.
Mrs. J. Wiebe and Mrs.
W. King read the Easter
story in parts, showing
the betrayal, the denial,
the trials, the crucifixion
and the resurrection.
Portrayals of Judas,
Peter, Pilate, Caiaphas
and others were given. In
the portrayals, thoughts
