RECTOR, ST.
GEORGE'S

There is a good case for
St. Peter. He was im-
pulsive, which made him
both a better Christian
and a worse one. He was
always ready to affirm
his faith in his Lord,
daring enough to follow
more closely his Lord -
even into the hall of the
High Priest's house -
when the other disciples
had fled. On Easter
morning he was the first
to go into the tomb.
Yet, when challenged,
he denied that he knew
Jesus. He was the only
disciple, so far- as we
know, who placed himself
in such a dangerous
position. Peter's denial
was spoken: the other
denied him by their ac-
tions. There is much to be
said for St. Peter, Jesus'
needs men like him.
St. Thomas has been
labelled a doubter. It
might have been better to
have called him Honest
Thomas, because he was
not afraid to say what
many of , the other
disciples were thinking.
There is much to be said
for him, too, Jesus needs
men like him.

There is even
something to be said for
Judas. He probably
meant well. If he was, as
is commonly supposed, a
political activist who
wanted to put Jesus in the
position of a
revolutionary leader, and
who was certain he could
accomplish this by
securing his release at
the Passover' by a voice
vote of the people (after
all, they had hailed him
with joy on Palm Sun-
day), he might be par-
doned for taking things
into his own hands.
Jesus had said many
things that could have
been interpreted as
politically significant:
the word's with which
bystanders taunted him
on the cross, for example,
"You would destroy the
temple and rebuild it in
three days".
It could be that Judas,
and .others like him,
sometimes' called
"Zealots", 'thought that
with a little more push,
they could make Jesus
into their kind of leader.
But Jesus doesn't need
disciples like that.
Our Lord needs us as
his disciples. He knows
and understands our
doubts and our im-
pulsiveness. But he can
do without those false
disciples who, for per-
sonal gain or political
advantage, try to make
him conform to their
ideas.
It is alleged that Henry
VIII, in a moment of
anger, prayed "May MY
will be YOURS",• rather
than the other way
around. Is it possible that
