This is the dining room and kitchen of the doll house which Gus
Chisholm, a self-proclaimed hobbyist, is building for his gran-
ddaughter. He has purchased most of the furniture at miniature
shops in Chicago but plans to build some of the bedroom and
kitchen furniture himself using model kits he bought. Eventually
he hopes to build all the furniture for the house. (Photo by Joanne

with'VIUTTAART'S: reduced mortgage rate
A person could easily spend thousands of dollars to furnish a doll that itis too good to play with. Miniature shops, where little '
house like the one Gus Chisholm is building for his grand- furniture items can be purchased, are popular in the United
daughter. Mr. Chisholm says he didn't buy really good furniture States but haven't really caught on here yet, says Mr. Chisholm.

phone. Mr. Chisholm will
be building the dry sink
and other kitchen
cabinets.
A woman who Mr.
Chisholm knows is
making a Tittle living
room rug for the house
and his former
secreatary from Dear-
born is painting
miniature oils.to hang on
the walls. She has also
made some braided rugs
for a few of the rooms.
Mr. Chisholm already
had many of the tools he
needed to work on the doll
housebut he also had to
buy some he didn't have.
He has been buying most
of his materials for the
house locally. He won't
give an estimate on how
much the completed :doll
house will have cost him.
"You try not to think of
those things' when it's for
your granddaughter," he.
laughs.
Mr. Chisholm was well
underway with his
project when he found out
that, by coincidence,
there were two other
women in town- also
...building doll houses- trona.
the same set of plans.
Mrs. "`Harold Jeffery
and Mrs. Graham
MacDonald are each
building doll houses ' for
themselves in the Jef-
fery's basement with the
help of their husbands.
Mrs. Jeffery is building
all her own furniture to
outfit the house and Mrs.
Graham is filling her
house with her miniature
collection of furniture,
dishes, etc.
The houses, with their
fine detail and their little
pieces -of furniture, are so
elaborate and so' char-
ming that it is easy to see
how an adult would get
just as much pleasure
and enjoyment from
them as a child. •
"Even if Ruth can't
appreciate hers now, she
will when she's a mother
herself," explains Mr.
Chisholm.
ANTICIPATION
Ruth knows all about
the doll house that her
grandfather is building
for her and she excitedly
follows its progress
through telephone con-
versations and visits
from Bramalea.
"I decided to tell her
about it because
sometimes the an-
ticipation can be more
exciting than the actual
receiving," explains Mr.
Chisholm.
Mr. Chisholm enjoys
hobbies because of the
anticipation himself. He
feels continually excited
while awaiting the final
outcome of projects he is
working on and most
projects are never
finished, he says.
He has always been a
model builder. In 1958 he
completed one of the first
home -built airplanes in
Canada. After flying this
plane . for six years
himself, he sold it and to
his knowledge, it is still
being flown by the man
he sold it to. He built the
plane at Sky Harbor
airport. It took three
years to complete and
during that time he was
continually ally: __.excited,- he
says. The government
registration he received
for his airplane contained
the letters RAC in it.
Those letters are his
initials, Robert Angus.
Chisholm. He also
received the Golden
Hammer award from`•
Mechanix Illustrated for
his efforts. He later spent
seven years rebuilding
another plane which used
to belong to a Broadway
star.
Mr. Chisholm used to
work at Malton airport in
-.Toronto where he met his
wife Jean who was from
Goderich. He says he
"followed her" to
Goderich in 1945 and got a
job at Sky Harbor airport
where he worked until
1950. He got his private
pilot's Licence in 1948 and
his air engineer's licence
in 1949. The latter allows
him . to inspect aircraft.
He completed training for
both his licences with the
late Keith Hopkinson.
When he . left Sky
Harbor airport, Mr.
Chisholm went to work as
a sales manager for a
Ford dealership in town
and then he went to work
for Dearborn., making tail
pipes. He resigned from
that job• -this year after •19
years and a lot of tail
pipes. He decided he
wanted a change.

His resignation has left
him some more time to
work on Ruth's dollhouse
but he says, he only works
on it as long as he feels
like it. If you work on •a
project when you don't
really f.nel like. it, it
becomes more like a job,
he explains.
Although the doll house
involves a lot of fine,
detailed work,, Mr.
Chisholm says, "It's not
too much work when its
for your granddaughter."
Lucky Ruth to have
such a devoted grand-
father!
