for the 1979 golf opening.

minions have already
been down on numbers
seven and eight, trying to
clean up the mess left in
the wake of the spring

river breakup. They
might remind one of the
nutty ladies of literary
fame, who insisted going
down to clean up the river
bank by collecting twigs.

Old Level 1 foes move into chess club final
This year's play-offs
are rolling along quickly
and smoothly,
In Level 1 semi-finals
Charlie MacDonald
proved too 'much for
Brian Miller. Brian
played very well in both
games but Charlie played
just a little bit stronger to
win both games:

Level 1 players to. tee off
in the finals. Charlie and
Louis fought it out all
season for first place and
now will decide the issue.
In Level 2 semi-final
play Doug Brindley
continued to play very
well winning the .second
game against Darrell
Clutton to take the series
in two games. Doug now
advances'to the Finals. •
Bob Fitzjames is giving
Bob Dick a real battle in
the first of their semi-
final games. Bob Fitz-
james seems to have a
slight edge with the game
adjourned after four
hours of play.
In Level 3 quarter-
finals Don Bogie came
hack to win the last two
games to edge out John
Klieze 2 games to one.
However, . Don ran up
against a brick wall when
he played Steve Hammill.

rink wins
in Orillia
A Goderich rink
skipped by Cam Bogie
participated in a Mens'
Open Bonspiel in Oriallia
on the weekend and won
the third event trophy.
Bogie and his rink of
vice, Al Matheson;
second, Dennis Lebrun
and lead, jamieson Ribey
took the trophy with a
record 'of five wins
against only one loss.
Much of the com-
petition in the open
bonspiel was from the
Toronto area.

Owen Moriarty in Level
four play.
job getting the course in
shape again, but we know
Pete is•equal to it. It looks
as though our No. 7 green
took an awful beating,
and that's .un-
derstand'a6le after seeing
the great chunks of ice
that gouged their way
across it. Speaking of
Tennis, did you know that
the old Maitland Golf
Club used to have tennis
courts, in approximately
the places where the
curling rink now stands?
With the decline of tennis
in the late 30's our courts,
along with others in town
at the old Sunset Hotel, at
St. Peter's Church and
the old High School on
Britannia Rd., fell into
disuse and were even-
tually abandoned
altogether. However, in
the past few years there
has been a terrific
resurgence of tennis and
everyone (well, almost
everyone) is taking to the
courts again. It's a great
way to get your exercise
and fill your lungs with
good fresh air, but as for
me, (pant, pant) I
wouldn't last (cough,
wheeze) ten minutes
(gasp, ugh!), I can't dash
around a tennis court, but
I can go 18 holes around a
golf course, /so you see,
there is something for
everyone down at
Maitland.
The Ladies' Golf

their spring meeting in
