(photo by Dave Sykes) St. Mary's teams win The St. Marys girls and boys basketball teams both took top honors in a four team round robin series, Saturday. 'The schools` par- ticipating in the one -day tournament included Robertson, Holmesville, Colborne and St. Marys. The St. Marys boys 'team was undefeated in three games defeating • Robertson, 29-2; Colborne. 39-15 and Holmesville 30:5. The St. Marys girls team was also unbeaten in their three games but needed a 20-18 overtime win in the final over Robertson to take the title. ' In the other games they defeated Colborne 22-16 and Holmesville 23- 8. Friday in preparation for their trip to the Oldtimers tournament in St. Petersburg, Florida. Oldtitner coach, Gord Crawford, said the team will be leaving Goderich April 19 and will be gin play in the tournament, Sunday, April 22. ' The St. Petersburg tournament features 44 teams in a round robin format. The teams will be divided into, six divisions. Goderich will be part of the D division that in- cludes the Georgian Bay Indians, a kingston suburb and a team from New Brunswick. Each team will play four games in the tournament. Despite the fact the tournament will be played in Florida, where temperatures are in the high 80s, there are only two teams from the United States, one from Sweden and one from Finland. The remaining 40 teams are.Canadian. Coach Crawford was optimistic of the teams. chances since the team has lost only two games to oldtimer teams in exhibition play this year. The exploits of the team and the reception they received in Goderich on returning home were mentioned in a recent article about oldtimer hockey in Reader's Digest. Player and author, Larry Grainger, in the March issue of the magazine, described in detail the heroe's welcomed accorded to the team by the residents of Goderich. Foresters hold bowling banquet A lovely roast beef supper was served at the Saltford Valley Hall to the Sunday Night Forester's Bowling League for their banquet and awards night, April 7, 1979. President Glenn Lamb gavea short speech after which the awards were presented. .High single was presented by Treasurer Debbie Ginn to Tom Willis -373 and Janet Rumig 297. League secretary, Melanie Swan, presented high triple to George Robinson -815 and Nancy Willis 690. High average was presented by Glenn Lamb to Kevin Rumig_ 228 and Rose Rising 191. The winners of the first- half bowling. schedule were Hopeless with 41 points. This trophy was presented by its donor, Harry ,Little. The team members were Tom and Nancy Willis, Ron and Ruth Bushell, and Jim and Darlene Fielder. The second -hall win- ners were Eager Beavers with 43' points. This Forester trophy was presented by Chief Head Ranger, Jim Drehmann. The team members were Kevin and Janet Rumig, Don and Dawn Sowerby and Jon and Debbie, Ginn. The Playoff champs were Jack's Turtles with a total pinfall of 3440. The trophy was presented by its donor, Eric Miller. The team members were Jack and Olive Gilbert, Delmar and Judy Sproul and Ted and . Sylvia Johnston. The Vice -President, Tom Willis, presented the gift for most -improved bowler to Ed Johnston, who increased his average by 50 points, from 129 to 179. The election of officers for the new executive followed. For the year 1979-80, they are as follows; Tom Willis, President; Debbie Ginn - Vice President; Cathy Wilbe-Secretary and Debbie McPhee Treasurer. Softball registration May 5 The Goderich Recreation department will attempt to develop T - ball, and boys and girls recreational softball leagues this summer. Recreation director, Jim Moore, said that following a meeting with parents registration will be held May 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the recreation office to determine the interest in forming leagues or teams. Tentatively it is hoped that T -ball can be set up for both boys and girls in divisions of five and six- year olds and another for seven .and eight year- olds. The softball teams for both boys and girls would grouped according to age and ability for youngsters from 'nine up to 15 years of age. --Moore said—the teams -1 will be set up to provide youngsters with the opportunity of learning the game, developing skills and enjoying the Boort on their own level. :s for the teams will not follow specific rule books but will be im- plemented for the benefit of the youngsters. Sifto takes lead in CHHL final series Sifto scored three goals in the first period and coasted to a 6-2 win over Sunset to grab a -2-1 lead in the CHHb.final series. The fourth game of the series was played Tuesday and the •fifth game, if necessary, will be played Thursday at 8 p.m. Sifto held a 3-0 margin after one period of play butSunset outscored Sifto 2-1 in the second period to trail 4-2 heading into the final 20 minutes of play. Sifto capped the win scoring two goals in the final period. Six players -shared the Sifto scoring with Warren Watt, Dave Molson, Rick Sowerby, Dennis Lassaline, Larry Boyd and John Philips each scoring once.
