Mustangs win Ontario championship
BY T.D.
The Goderich Green
and ''Parent Mustangs
won the Ontario Minor
Hockey Association 'BB'
Midget championship
Sunday in Borden when
they defeated Borden 6-3
to take the best -of -seven
final series four games to
one.
After losing the first
game of the series, 3-1,
the Mustangs swept the
next four games to win
the All -Ontario title in
convincing fashion.
Goderich won the second
game 6-1, took game three
5-4, and then swept both
games on the weekend, 7-
1 here Sairday and 6-3 in
Borden Sunday.
Last year the Green
and Parent midgets were
OMHA finalists, losing to
Huntsville in six games
but this season, with nine
players returning to form
a strong nucleus, the
Mustangs, under coach
Bill Fritzley, were
determined to bring
provincial honours to the
town. The OMHA'
championship is the first
midget title for Goderich
since 1956-57 but is the
second championship in
three years for local
teams. Two years ago a
team consisting of
basically the same
players won the OMHA

pionship.
This year's Green and
Parent team had it all
beginning with strong
goaltending, a solid
defenced and three ef-
- fective forward lines.
They captured the WOAA
midget BB championship
in their own league,
losing only two games in
their regular schedule,
and .defeating Hanover
and Listowel in league
playoffs. They then en-
tered OMHA play and
walked through four
more playoff series to
capture the provincial
title, sweeping series
with Strathroy,
Amherstburg and New
Hamburg in the
minimum number of
games and• losing only
once to Barden in the
finals. In OMHA playoff
games Goderich out-
scored their opposition
96-27.
In Borden Sunday
following their victory,
OMHA representative Al
Richardson, in presen-
ting the OMHA cham-
pionship to Goderich
team captain Larry
Madge, called the
Mustangs "truly worthy
champions." Following
the traditional winning
ride on the town's
firetruck on their arrival
back in Goderich, the
team members were
honoured at 'an im-
promptu reception in the
arena auditorium where
Mayor' Harry Worsell
extended congratulations
to the team on behalf of
the town.
Goderich hockey fans
will have one more
chance to see their
championship midget
team in action here
tomorrow (Friday) at 8
p.m. when they will play'
an exhibition game
against the Goderich
Oldtimers- who are
preparing for a tour-
nament in Florida next
week.
The third game in the
final series with Borden
provided the closest score
RTS
of series, with Goderich
jumping off to a. 4-1 lead
only to see Borden come
back with three goals in
the third period to tie it
up. The Mustangs,
however, got the winning
goal with 2:48 left when
Larry Madge knocked a
rolling puck ahead to Dan
Maillet in 'front of the
Borden net and Maillet
banged it by David
Geffros to give Goderich
the 5-4 win.
Madge had opened the
scoring, slapping in a
passout from behind the
net from Maillet three
minutes into the game. A
power play goal by Rob
Trebish from Rob
McDonald and Mike
Hodges came after the
Mustangs exhibited some
fine puck control in the
Borden zone. Sean,
Garagan got one back for
Borden before the end of
the first period. In the
second period Jim
Costello and Don. Elliott
scored Goderich goals.
Both came on hard shots
right along the ice which
beat Geffros. Hodges and
Larry Gayner assisted on
both of the goals.
Goals by Jeff Jackson,
Mark Guerris and Sean
Garagan in a space of
less than two minutes
early in the third period
tied the game up before
Maillet's goal gave
Goderich the victory.
Game four of the
series, scheduled for
Friday here was .post-
poned 24 hours because of
the belated winter storm
which hit the area,- but
the icy condit-ions didn't
cool off the Mustangs as
they blasted Borden 7-1
here Saturday.
The first period was
scoreless and featured
end to end action with
Goderich having a slight
edge in territorial play.
The Mustangs opened the
scoring at 1:34 of the
second period when Dan
Maillet lifted Larry
Madge's • rebound over
Geffros following an
initial shot from Rob
McDonald at the point.
Mike Hodges got the next
Goderich goal when he
went in alone and deked
Geffros after a Borden
defenceman's pass hit
Hodge's skin pads,
springing him loosewith
the puck at the Borden
blueline. Larry Madge
made it 3-0 scoring on a
quick snapshot to the
gloveside after he had
knocked down an at-
tempted clearing pass
with his glove just inside
the blueline and went in
on a two on one with Mike
Hodges. Larry Gaynor
then hit paydirt on a
rebound he knocked past
Geffros as he skated
through th.e. crease
following Mike Hodge's
shot.
Steve Gallow, who
played a fine game in
goal for Goderich, then
stopped Sean. Garagan's
penalty shot attempt,
awarded when a
Goderich player fell on
the puck in the goal
crease. Jim Costello
resumed the oderich
scoring paraa, scoring
on a shot from a bad
angle deep along the left
boards. Mike Hodges got
the sixth Goderich goal of
the second period when
he caught the short side
with a close -in shot in the
last minute of the period.
Garagan got Borden's
only goal on a power play
at 2:08 of the third period.
Goderich got a power-
play goal of their own at
the eleven minute mark
when Rob McDonald
scored on a slapshot from
the point after another
fine exhibition of puck
control by the Mustangs
in Borden's end. Mike
Hodges and Larry Madge
made the passes to. set up
McDonald's shot for the
final goal of the game.
In the final game of the
series Sunday in Borden,
the teams battled evenly
through the first two
periods which ended with
the score tied 2-2.
Borden got the only
first period goal when
Paul Passero scored on a

in the Wheatley lineup.
Wheatley was ob-
viously intent on winning
the series at home and
they did so in convincing
style scoring four goals in
both the first and third
period en rout to a 9-3
win.
Wheatley put together
a consistent offenisve
attack and peppered
Sailor netminder, Dennis
Fleishcauer with 48 shots
in scoring nine goals.
The Sailors opened the
scoring in the game but it
was the only time in the •
game they enjoyed a
a
lead. Paul Kelly scored
the goal on a power play
at 8.14 with assists from
line -mates Dan Duncan
and Ken Meriam.
The Omsteads wasted
no time getting that one
back as Rich Will scored
14 seconds later to tie the
game. That goal sparked
the Omsteads as they
scored three straight
goals in a five minute
span, ioncluding two
power play efforts, to

Sailors held on for their
second win of the series.
Grant Shelton and Rick
Fremlin scored first
period goals for Goderich
and Ken Meriam and
Colquhoun added second
'period goals.
The fifth game was
somewhat tame com-
pared to the others
despite the fact- it took
Dan Duncan and Jim
Marchand only 12
seconds to get into a
scrap.
The season is over for
the Sailors "but as far as
coach Bill Gallow and his
crew are concerned it
was a -most successful
one.

regular Schedule tied for
the division lead but first
place was awarded to
Mildmay on the strength
of its record against
Goderich.
