Winners for Thursday night were: ladies - Mrs. Ila Pollock and Mrs. Ruby Anderson; and gentlemen - Stanley Dennis and Ralph Horn. SOCIArL NEWS Eric Reaburn has returned home from a two week vacation with his son, James and daughter Maureen, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Griffin and son William of Vancouver s to Colborne corner I rtru,l, h.utl;n_ B.C. While in B.C., Mr. Reaburn and his . son James were skiing on Whistler's Mountain which is a popular ski resort and even though they were skiing up on the mountain, down in the city, it was typical spring and summer weather with men folk walking around in their shirt sleeves. The community is pleased to report that Mrs. Pearl Lawrence of Airport Road is home convalescing favourably after having surgery in Alexandra Marine and General Hospital, Goderich. Her many friends wish her a speedy recovery resum': r;d OBITUARIES The sympathy of the community is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon McGratten and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley McGratten of Meneset on the loss of their mother, Mrs. Jennie McGratten. Verne Gladhill, a well- known resident of Ben - miller for many years who operated the Woolen Mill there, which was at one time -n thriving business, passed away recently. The sympathy of the community is extended to his wife and relatives. Mrs. James .(Norma) Bisset of Meneset, who for many years lived at Saltford Heights, passed away on Monday in Alexandra Marine and General Hospital, following a short illness. Mrs. Bisset was well known and leaves to mourn her passing, two daughters, Mrs. Helen Pirie and Mrs. Allan (Betty) Graham; and one son James Bisset, all of Meneset; and a host of friends. The sympathy of the community is ex- tended to her family and relatives. W.I. Tiger Dunlop Women's Institute annual meeting will be in the form of a pot luck luncheon for their April meeting in Colborne Township Hall, Thur- sday, April 26 at 1 p.m. Reports of the secretary and standing committee conveners will be ,given and officers for the 1979-80 term will be installed. Roll call will be, "Suggestion for next year's program". Canoeists brave storm in Clinton Kinsmen race on Maitland River By Jim Fitzgerald The Bunny Bundle Canoe Race in London may be the world's largest canoe race, but the Clinton Kinsmen Canoe Race down the Maitland River last Sunday will" certainly be one of the coldest ever. Some 75 canoeists in 42 entries Struggled through deep snow to get to the river, and then braved minus four degree temperatures, a snowstorm, and icy waters to finish the third annual event that iaises funds for Cystic Fibrosis. But despite the bone chilling day, no one was injured or suffered from exposure, -although two. canoes did upset. •Many of the other contestants -battled ice -covered paddles, ' and frozen fingers before the trip was over. Clinton Kinsmen organizer Arnold Riley said he was very pleased with the turnout • of canoeists, despite the terrible day, and the charity event will probably realize about $750 the same as last year. First to complete the 14 - mile course from Auburn to the Forrester's Bridge at Holmesviile in a record time, over the fast water, was the Junior team entrants of Rick Kloss and Tony Gibbings, who had the fastest time of 78 minutes. Other winners included Michael Laing and Tom Civic Corner The Housing Action committee will meet on Thursday, April 19 at 4 p.m. in the council chambers at town hall. Goderich Town Council will meet on Monday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers at town hall. A special town council meeting regarding the budget will be. _held on Tuesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at town hall. The Committee of Adjustment willmeet on Tuesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the mayor's office at town hall. The Goderich Airport Committee "will meet on Wednesday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers at town hall. The Huron County Planning Board will meet on Thursday, April 19 at 10 a.m. in the council chambers at the Court House in Goderich. Burns from Amherstburg in the men's expert while Peter and Roger Har- bucian of St. Marys won the men's advanced amateur class, and the team of Doug Krzlyzek of London. and Terry Iredalle of Centralia won the men's amateur class. In the service club class, Robert Shaddick -and Derwin Carter of Londesboro were first across the line, while Don Jefferson and —Steve Jones of the Clinton Kinsmen. won the Zone K interclub class. Don Wise and Paul Middleton of Clinton were the winners of the novelty class, and Mary Knight and Murray Bremner of London won the couples' class.
