HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-04-12, Page 7Foresters present $3,000 to cancer Canadian Forester courts Benmiller and Fascination, held a successful dance at Saltford Valley Hall on April 3. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of a $3,300 cheque to the Goderich branch of the Canadian Cancer Society. Les Pitblado accepted the cheque,' on behalf of the Cancer Society from Jim Drehmann of Court Benmiller. Les noted that the Canadian Foresters have given more to cancer research than any other group in Canada. The cheque represented one half the proceeds of the Foresters Snowmobile Run. The other half will go to cancer research, Phyllis Pitblado and Jean Ginn pinned daf- fodils on the dancers as they entered the hall and accepted donations on behalf of the Cancer Society. Ted Johnston was the Winner in a draw for a lawn chair. The door prize, a ham, was won by Rose Rising. Forester dances are held at Saltford the first Saturday in April, June, August and November. Building for tomorrow-W.I. theme "Building for Tomorrow" is to be the theme of Huron -West Women's Institutes when they meet for their an- nual meeting on May 28 at Holmesville with members of the Goderich Township WOm en ' s Institutes as hostesses. The guest speaker will be Miss Helen Allen of Today's Child and Family Finder, keeping on the subject of The International Year of the Child. Mrs. Graham McNee of Dungannon, Huron -West president, was in charge of the meeting held in the Nile United Church. The 12 branches were represented and plans were outlined for the District Annual which begins at 9:30 a.m. Each branch is asked to bring a gift or gifts for the craft table which will be in the charge of Tiger Dunlop Branch. Knox Presbyterian Church in Goderich played host this week to the 32nd annual meeting of the Synodical Society of Hamilton and London Women's Missionary Society (W.D.). The theme for the meeting was "The Light of the World". Attending the meeting, back row, left to right, were Mrs. Robert McAllister, president of the Huron Presbyterial, Mrs. Gordon Kaitting, president of CWL sponsor poverty meal As their special con- tribution in the ob- servance of lent, St. Peter's C.W.L. sponsored a "poverty meal" , on Monday, April 2. Well over 100 people turned out to dine on soup and dry bread, and all seemed to be happy to experience-,-- in a small way, the manner in which the people of the Third World live every day. Donations for the meal were voluntary, and all` donations will be sent to "Share Lent," the Catholic Organization for Development and Peace. Following the meal, a short business meeting was held, with Mrs. D. Murphy, the President in charge. After opening prayers and suitable spiritual reading, the minutes of last month's meeting were read by secretary, Miss E. O'Brien. Treasurer Mrs. W. Hogari gave her report. The AnnualDaffodil Tea was held in the Salvation Army Citadel. Two ladies from the C.W.L. Council volun- teered to serve and all the relishes were made by the C.V.L. \ The Annual Mass in honor of Our Lady of Good Council, patroness of the C.W.L., will be celebrated April 26 at 10:30 a.m. Members are urged to attend. Membership list_ is ready, and the -drive is well on its way. There will be many op- portunities to renew membership. Be ready Talent search • is on The talent search goes on for children to play the seven young members of the Trapp family in the Huron Country Playhouse production The Sound of Music. More than 30 children have now been interviewed and asked to sing. "It is not just a matter of talent," says Murphy, the artistic director, "there are plenty of talented youngsters in the area, but the seven children not only have to be able to sing and act, they must also look like brothers and sisters. Of course, age is a great factor too. The children range in age from five to 16." One additional day of auditions is set for Grand Bend on Saturday, April 21 from 1-5 p.m. at the Grand Bend- Public School. when the volunteer calls on you. The Diocesan Con- vention will be held at the University of Windsor on May 7 and 8. The mother and daughter pot luck supper will .be held at the May meeting on' May 14. Everyone is invited. Entertainment will be followed by the business meeting. Open House for the Rectory is to be held on May 6. Mrs. A. Stemp will be one of the conveners in charge of refreshments for that occasion. May 27 is Confirmation Day in the Parish, and the, C.W.L. will serve refreshments, following the ceremony for the confirmands and his or her parents.
