Susan Freeman, student placement counsellor and
manager at the Canada Employment Centre for
Students, told senior students at G.D.C.I. on
Monday to be self-confident and persistant when
looking for jobs this summer. She told the students
to really sell themselves to the employers. Miss
Freeman has been busy visiting the high schools in
the county this month giving tips on how to get
summer jobs. By the way, the reason several
students have hats on in this picture is because
Monday was "Hat and Tie Day" at G.D.C.I., a

Even though it wasn't, a school day, about 40 area •,
public school teachers wete up bright and early on
Saturday morning to attend a poetry workshop held
at Clinton Public School. Here, Mary Howarth,

Teaches Associations of Ontario (FWTAO)
discusses different ways to teach poetry to students
with Paul Carroll of Seafo th Public School and "
Marg Hogarth of Stephen Central Public School.

Teachers go poetic now
Interested Huron
County Elementary
Teachers gathered at
Clinton Public School on
Saturday morning to hear
Mary Howarth,
Execut;ve Assistant of
F.W.T.A.O., present a
workshop on poetry.
Mrs. Howarth gave the
teachers some concrete
suggestions on making
the teaching of poetry an
enjoyable and worthwhile
experience for children.
She suggested that
teachers institute a
"listening -to -poetry"
program for a couple of
months which would
expose the pupilstoall
kinds of poems. Then
poetry writing could
begin starting with easy
kinds such as non-verbal
poetry, concrete poetry,
shape poetry, cinquain
and diamente.

Interest free loans help
Ontario's Student
Venture Capital program
will provide $125,000 in
interest-free loans during
1979 to encourage en-
terprising students to set
up their own summer
business.
Since 1974, Student
Venture Capital hays
given full-time students
(18 years and older) the
opportunity to finance
their education while
acquiring business ex-
perience first hand.
Last year, a total of 97
projects were approved
and $82,525 was loaned in
amounts ranging from
$200 to $1,000 -- the
maximum amount
available to each ven-
ture.
Sponsored by the
Ministry of Colleges and
Universities, in co-
operation with various
Chambers of Commerce
in Ontario and the Royal
Bank of Canada, Student
Venture Capital is part of
the Ontario Youth
Secretariat's $19 million
Experience '79 program
to provide students with
employment experience.
While most .student
ventures are profitable,
successful projects tend
to be labour intensive and
are characterized by low
capital outlay, a great
deal of hard work and
familiarity with the field
'of endeavour.
In 1978, a University of
Toronto student
capitalized upon his
knowledge and . skills by
operating a water ski and
kite school in the
Muskoka resort area: He
netted over $5,000
providing instruction in
all levels of water and
kite skiing.
Another university
student' became a sub-
contractor to a com-
mercial painting firm
and employed 13 students
throughout the summer.
His total net profit was
estimated at. $5,000;
wages paid ttr:employees•
exceeded $10,000.

bers of Commerce share
