Helicopter
service gets

While hospital beds are
being cut across the
province and hospital
budget restraints urged,
Health Minister Dennis
Timbrell has just an-
nounced that a helicopter
ambulance service has”
been extended in its
present form for an
additional year until
March 31, 1980 at a cost of
approximately SI million.
Over the past 19
months, as a pilot
program, the helicopter
ambulance service has
proven its value for the
transport of critically 111 vice is a necessary part of

To date the helicopter
ambulance service has
transported 222 critically
ill people to hospitals in
Toronto. Approximately
35 'percent Of the 222
patients transported
were premature newborn

beneficial to small

physicians, without

Weather warnings
to change .name
The new terms "Severe
Weather Watch" and
"Severe Weather War-
ning" will replace the
familiar "Thunderstorm
Advisories:" and
"Warnings" in Ontario
beginning- April.; 17-1-919-,
according to George A.
McPherson, Ontario
Region Director of
Environment Canada"'s
Atmospheric Environ-
ment Service (AES).
Developed to comply
with the terminology
followed in most of North
America, the new
nress'ages will warn of
dangerous local storms
which occur in Ontario
from spring to fall.
The new "watch" and
"warning" messages will
be used exclusively to
warn of dangerous
weather associated with
thunderstorms, such as
large ,hail, localized
downpours, violent winds
and tornadoes. When
such conditons are likely
fa occur, the first
message issued will
normally be a "Severe
Weather Watch." This
will alert residents in the
area affected to watch for
impnnding severe
weather and means that
there is a high potential
for dangerous local
storms at some later
time. The watch will
usually be issued one to
six hours in advance. .
-rk Sev -Pe---W-eath-e}---
Warning" serves notice
up to one hour in advance
that a severe thun,
derstorm or tornado is
either imminent in a
particular area, or is
actually occurring.
Details about the
location, severity and
movement 'of the storm
well be provided with the
warning.
`;Due to the complexity
and rapid development of
thunderstorms' said Mt.
McPherson, "there may
be cases where a tornado
may occur without
warning. However, some
advance notice in the
form of a "watch" will
almost certainly have
been provided.
Mr. McPherson
stressed that in the case
of "Severe Weather
Warnings," pe ple should
take the p ecautions
necessary to minimize
the potential for loss of
life, injury and property
damage:
