Pesky Stars bow to
New Hamburg 6-5
BY DAVE SYKES
You can say one thing
about the Signal -Star
juveniles, they just never
give up trying.
The Stars bowed from
the OMHA playoff scene
here Thursday to New
-Hamburg but they
Wouldn't let the visitors
slip into the juvenile final
without a struggle to the
last bell.
The Stars dropped the
first two games of the
best -of -five series, 4-3 and
6-0, but forced a fourth
game in the series with a
3-1 win in New Hamburg
last Wednesday.
New Hamburg finally
eliminated the pesky
Stars with a 6-5 win in the
fourth game, Thursday
after piling up a three -
goal lead and watching
the Stars whittle the lead
to a single goal late in the
game.
New Hamburg was a
better club but the Stars
proved that hard work
could offset their
limitations. They did well
with the talent they had
and without a few
defensive lapses and bad
breaks could. have put
New Hamburg in a
binding•position.
The Stars only win of
the series was a 3-1
decision in New Hamburg
last Wednesday. They
took a one -goal lead in the
first period on a power
play goal by Terry Kisch
with Chris Carter
assisting.
That lead stood until
the final period when
New Hamburg wasted no
time in evening things up
with a goal just 16
seconds into the final
period.
Despite New Ham-
burg's quick start the
Stars regained their one -
goal cushion two minutes
later as Larry Daer set
up Roger LeW,if4what
proved to be the wishing
goal. Daer then added his
second point of the game
scoring an insurance goal
in the final minute of play
to clinch the victory.
The Stars had their up
and downs in the fourth
game and a second period
defensive lapse cost them
four goals and the hockey
game. '
The teams were tied 1-1
after the first period but
New Hamburg
capitalized on Star errors
'and turned them into four
goals in a seven minute
span to lead 5-2 after two
Periods.
It appeared the Stars
were out of the game at
that point but early in the
final period Rick Rawson
scored to pull the Stars
within two goals only to
have New Hamburg
respond with a goal just
one minute later to regain
the vEseturs three -goal
lead.
Trailing 6-3 midway
through the final period
there was little hope for
the juveniles but goals by
Hugh Hanly and Roger
Lewis put the Stars into a
one -goal deficit with two
minutes remaining in the
game. They were
unable to score the tying
goal despite a last minute
effort employing six
attackers.
Hugh Hanly, who
played a strong game, led
the Stars. with two goals
and an assist. Larry Daer
added a goal and three
assists and line -mate
Roger Lewis chipped in
with a goal and two
assists. Rick Rawson
scored the other Goderich
goal.
New Hamburg now
meets Gananoque in the
juvenile final series.
The members of the
Signal -Star team include;
Gerry Gaynor, Tony
Bedard, Rick Rawson,
Terry Kisch, Randy
Stoddart, Rick Leddy,
Hugh Hanly, Larry Daer,

connell, Doug

Merchants tie final
with win over Zurich
A four -goal outburst in
the first period that in-
cluded three straight
goals by Ron. Whetstone
quick lead in the game
scoring two goals in the
opening 10 minutes. But
the Merchants regained
lifted the Goderich,.....,.thei-r composure scoring
Merchants to a 7-5 win in four straight goals before
the end of the period to
hold a 42 lead.
The line of Whetstone,
Dave Graf and Cam
McDonald did most of the
damage scoring three
straight goals in a three
minute span. McDonald
scored all three goals,
one on a power play, with
assists going to his
linemates.
Brian Thompson
scored the fourth Mer-
chant goal with assists
going to Frank Hagen
and Paul Corriveau.
The Buckeyes quickly
narrowed the deficit in
the second period to a
single goal on a scoring
Intermediate C final
action last Wednesday.
The win was the first of
the series for 'the Mer-
chants and ties the best -
of -seven affair at one
game apiece.

Zurich jumped off to a
play by Randy McKinnon
and Rick Schilbe tied the
game midway through
the second period .on a
power play effort, his
second goal of the game.
The Merchants
recovered and deflated
the Buckeyes comeback
effort with two straight
goals before the end of
the period to regain the
two goal cushion. Len
Kolkman and Phil
Paquette scored the
second period goals for
Goderich.
Zurich again narrowed
the Merchant lead to a
single goal in the final
period scoring on a power
play at 15.53. Phil
Paquette scored the final
Goderich goal on a two -
on -one break with
linemate Phil Petrie to
close out the scoring.
Larry Daer of the Signal -Star juveniles tries to jam
the puck into the short side of the net as team-mate
Roger Lewis heads for the front of the net an the
other side. New Hamburg eliminated Goderich with
a 6-5 win in the fourth game of the best -of -five semi-
final series and will play Gananoque in the final.
