The, Goderich Green
and Parent Midgets
squared their best -of -
seven Ontario Minor
Hockey Association finals
at one game each with a
6-1 victory over Borden
here Saturday. Borden
had won the first game of
-the series by a 3-1 score in
Borden last Thursday.
Third game of the All-
Onta,rio finals was played
last night (Wednesday) in
Borden while game four
goes here tomorrow night
(Friday) at 8 p.m.
The Goderich squad
had difficulty adjusting to
the fast skating style of
the Borden team and ran
up against some sen-
sational goaltending by
Borden's David Geffros
in the first game. The
Mustangs had won ten
straight playoff games
with relative ease before
meeting Borden and had
not had to push them-
selves. They found out
that nothing less than
their best effort would be
good enough against
Borden. Although
Goderich had more than
their' share of play in the
second and third periods
and outshot the Borden
team, Geffros held them
at bay with his superb
goaltending.
The first period was
scoreless and 'featured
end to end action on the
Targe Borden ice surface
which provides lots of
skating room for these
two fine -skating teams.
Borden got on the
scoreboard first when
Mark Guerris scored
frorrn a scramble in front
of. the Goderich net at
2:03 of the second period.
Forty-six seconds later,
Rob Trebish got the
equalizer when he and
Dan Maillet went in on a
two on one after they had
been sprung loose by a
pass from defenceman
Robert McDonald.
Guerris put Borden
back on top with his
second goal of the night
on a shot off a faceoff in
the Goderich end with
just over three minutes
left in the second period.
The Mustangs had four
power, play opportunities
in the third period but
were unable to beat
Geffros despite sustained
pressure in the Borden
end of the rink. Even with
a twowlan advantage and
their goalie pulled to give
them three extra skaters
in the last minute, the
Goderich team could not
close the two goal gap
opened by Borden when
Paul Passero scored with
just under four minutes
left.
Playing at home
Saturday, the Mustangs
rden
1 series 1-1
played probably their
best hockey of the year in
their 6-1 victory. They
never stopped skating
and consistently finished
their checks in a style
that gradually slowed the
Borden squad down.
Borden again drew first
blood when Mark Guerris
scored on a rebound that
he lifted over a sprawled
Steve Gallow after only 27
seconds of play. Goderich
tied it up on a power play
effort when Dan Maillet
banged in a pass -out from
behind the net by Rob
Trebish: Rob McDonald
also received an assist on
the play.
The first period ended
in a 1-1 tie;'but'Trebish put
the home team in the lead
to stay in the first minute
of the second period when
he finally got the puck
behind Geffros after
banging away at a
rebound in the Borden
crease. Mike Hodges and
Larry . Madge were
credited with assists on
the Trebish goal which
also came on a power
play.
Madge got the next
Goderich goal less than a
minute later when he
streaked across the front
of the Borden . net and
knocked another rebound
out of mid-air past a
defenceless Geffros.
Linemates Trebish and
SPORTS
Maillet assisted.
The rest of the second
period was scoreless
again thanks to Geffros
who stoned the Goderich
attackers on at least four
clear-cut breakaways.
Borden threatened a
comeback early in the
third period and Steve
Gallow came up with
some big saves of his own
at the Goderich end of the
rink, but as the period
wore on the Borden
skaters slowed down
noticeably and the
Mustangs controlled the
ploy, scoring three times
in the last four minutes of
the game.
'Steve Walters fired in a
slapshot from the point in
a play with Maillet and
Madge for the first one
and then Jim Costello
dented the twine from the
left side after taking a
pass from Ken Reid.
Larry -Madge ended the
scoring when he beat a
frustrated Geffros with a
snap shot from the slot
for his second goal of the
game. Rob Trebish and
Dan Maillet were
credited with assists on
Madge's goal.
A fine crowd was on
hand for the game here
Saturday and another
near -capacity turn out is
expected for the game
here Friday for the fourth
game of the series.
