than they did in 1977. It
was the amount they sold
not just the price they
received that put the
income figures up.
The other concealed
point is that in 1976 and
1977, realized net farm
income declined 25
percent. Most farmers
will agree that a good
year is 'very nice indeed
but what really counts is
a good five year average.
For many farmers in this
province much of last
year's increase is only
going to offset losses fn
previous years.
If you take an average
of the last five years farm
incomes do not look that
good. This applies most
noticeably to beef far-
mers. Their five year
average leaves much to
be desired.
In fact for the three
years ending last fall,
many of . the beef
producers went into debt,
hanging on by the skin of
their teeth. It will, take
more than one good year
just to payoff the loans. It
will be a while yet before
they profit and who
knows what the situation
will be then. -
I sincerely hope, that
the consumers will
realize how important the
farmers' average
pos-itioln is. It" is so im,
portant that even. the
income tax people
recognize it. They give
the farmer the option of
averaging income over
five years because they
realize'that today's boom
is often paying for
yesterday's bust.
The Ministry of
Agriculture and Food
runs a number of dif-
- fere..nt programs to help
smooth out the boom -bust
cycle • that haunts
agriculture. There is
Farm Income
Stabilization, Crop
Insurance and special
emergency measures,
but there is sure no
substitute for a good
market.
=Playhouse
season
looks good
James Murphy,
Artistic Director of the
Huron Country
Playhouse, • has an-
nounced the line=up of
plays for the 1979 Festival
of Summer Theatre.
Murphy said it is a season
of five world hits and that
each'one would be given a
two week run.
The opening production
will be ' the delightful
British farce, POOLS
PARADISE by Philip
King. Peopled with those
wacky characters from
his SEE HOW THEY
RUN, it is filled with
slapstick high jinks that
,promises to keep
audiences roaring with
laughter. It opens June 27
and runs through July 7.
Next is the chilling
thriller, ANGEL
STREET by Patrick
Hamilton, the author of,
ROPE and HANGOVER
SQUARE.. In 1993 under
the name of 'ASLIGHT,
the play was turned into a
film with Charles Boyer-
-and Ingrid ---Bergman. 'A
menacing, suspense
drama', it is bound to keep
audiences on the edge of
their seats. It opens July
11 and closes July 21.
HARVEY by Mary
Chase will be the third
production. This beloved
comedy about Elwood P.
Dowd and his friend
Harvey, an invisible six
foot tall white rabbit has
been enchanting
playgoers and movie fans
alike all over the world
for years. It' has been
made into a motion
picture and a television
special, both starring the
vgnerable James
Stewart. It opens July 25
and runs through August
4.
The fourth presentation
is the hilarious comedy,
THE OWL AND THE
PUSSYCAT, by Bill
Manhoff. An instant
success on Broadway
with Alan Alda and the
late Diane Sands, it was
