J)y' GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 1979—PAGE 19 nd'n Recently we attended the Rodeo at Arcadia - about 50 miles from here - a small cowtown with everyone including the kids in big hats, jeans and boots - they keep everything lively. Their Rodeo has been very successful for quite a few years - even Canadian western cowboys are appearing in the competitions. This year I noticed there have been many improvements in the downtown area - empty stores have been cleaned up or filled up - whatever - it looks much nicer. The side streets are 'mowed, tidy and attractive with their myriad of colors. The affair runs for three days starting with a big parade and big dance Saturday night and the rodeo is crowded again on Sunday. Two or three of the organizations help relieve the food situation with beef and chicken barbecues. They have things pretty well under control all round. - This year we relaxed and really enjoyed the show - such a beautiful, sunny day -- but much to the chagrin of the management - funnier - Don.Denomme would like to help you arrange a mortgage •Debt Consolidation *Residential •Farms *Commercial •Builders' Loans •Interim Financing When you ,. need money...you need us. Builder - Sigfrido (Sig) Schulz Contact - ALEXANDER & CHAPMAN REALTY LIMITED 10 The Square Goderich 524-2177 because sb many' things went wrong for them. The animals did not co- operate and had the cowboys stomp in' on their hats. The big bulls were very exciting and the clowns got a real workout. In the midst of the struggles between man and beast, the P.A. system went dead: The show was almost over before they had it Martha Rathburn working again - THAT was poor management! A lot of the calves for the bull dozing look like full grown cattle - in miniature. They import these cute little .animals from Mexico - and it is now a big business. These little fellows are pretty smart and seem to know how to miss the lassoo and also to get out of the rope tied around three of their ankles. It was really funny as one beast after another foiled . the cowboys. • It was a sort of comedy of errors all the way thru. ut with arth•a Ver§ :'few records were broken but the only, ones who cared ' were the cowboys. The opening parade of flags was fantastic and - later the Quadrille in which men, ladies and some' children took part was also excellent, very colorful. The great bulls, as soon as they tossed their burden, trotted straight for the gate. The clowns diverted the attention of only two or three bulls with one huge animal that seemed to be trained in chasing clowns and knocking the barrel around. One big beautiful - bull would stand and make the dust fly as he snorted and sized up his enemy. Suddenly he would turn and run for the gate - leave everyone in the arena upset. They really made the day. Anyway, with all the disappointments for the cowboys, the crowd loved it. It is not often you see so many embarrassed because they had hard luck - but no one really cared, just laughed - no jeers. The parking problem was well cared for and the cars were on their way in good order. We . were back hone in an hour - pretty good if you could just visualize the great amount of traffic here this year,. For all the problems with the difference in our money, it hasn't made any less tourists, actually tourist trade is UP over last year. There are a great many things to see, places to go and places to stay - if you have a reservation. Getting around has been much more difficult with traffic jams everywhere. Those living here are using back roads and the lesser streets, but I'm sure it is all wor- thwhile with the warm weather. Our friends from Port Albert - the Kavanaughs and the Wrefords - are just fine and anxious to get back. The trailer camp will be nearly vacated by the end of April. Each day sees someone "going home". We expect to be back by end of April - please arrange to have the snow all gone and no surprise blizzard waiting. There has only been about one year in which there was no blizzard after we arrived home. Now, everyone stay well, enjoy the Spring which must be started by now and remember I love you all!
