The Goderich Signal -
Star juveniles faced
elimination in the third
game of the semkfinals in
New Hamburg Wed-
nesday, after, losing the
opening two games off the
series.
The Stars lost a tough 4-
3 decision in the first
game of the best -of -five
series in Goderich,
Saturday and New
Hamburg won the second
game at home, Sunday by
a convincing 6-0 margin.
The first game in
Goderich, Saturday was
undoubtedly the finest
juvenile game here this
year. The New Hamburg
squad is fast and carries
a bit of a size advantage
over Goderich.
But the Stars were up
for the game after their
quarter final win over
Mooretown and gave
good account of there-,
selves. New Hamburg
lead 2-1. after the first
period, 3-2 after two
periods and each team
scored once in the final
period.
New Hamburg scored
the first goal of the game
after five minutes of play
but the Stars evened
things up three minutes
later as Rick Stoddart
scored on a pass from
Dale Duncan. But
NewHamburg regained
their one -goal cushion 40
seconds later to lead 2-1
after the first period.
Goderich tied the game
at 6.31 of the second
period as Roger Lewis
tapped the puck into the
empty net on a two -on -
one pass play with Larry
Daer.
New Hamburg got the
lead back two minutes
later and took a two -goal
lead midway through the
final ' period as Lyle
Rettinger swept around
the defence and tucked a
backhander past Gerry
Gaynor in the Star's goal.
The Stars pressed and
were able to get back in
the game on a goal by
Lewis with two minutes
remaining in regulation
time. Working on the
powerplay Lewis
deflected a Rick Rawson
slapshot into the top
corner of the net to pull
the Stars within a single
goal. '
The Stars pulled their
goaltender in the final
minute of play but were,
unable to send the game
into overtime.
New Hamburg
dominated the second
game scoring three goals
in the first period and
coasting to a 6-0 win.
The game was much
more pysical than the
first .one if penalty
minutes are any in-
dication. New Hamburg
was assessed 18 minor
penalties compared to 13
for Goderich. The
Goderich statsdo not
include a game
misconduct handed out to
Dale Duncan in the third
period.

Government
wants opionions
The Ontario Government may not get
directly involved with violence.in minor hockey
but it is interested in parent comments on the
subject.
Comments from parents will come from
100,000 questionnaires distributed by the
Ontario Hockey Council, an advisory body to
the Ministry of Culture and Recreation:
Reuben Baetz, Minister of Culture and
Recreation, promised the survey after an NDP
member of the Legislature 'complained of
violence in minor hockey in a letter to Attorney -
General, Roy McMurtry. Baetz said 'the
questiorlsnaires will ask 17 questions dealing
with parents attitudes towards violence in
amateur hockey, coaching, refereeing and
organization.
The Ontario Hockey Council is made up of
leaders in organized hockey and interested
citizens. When the results of the survey are
received the Government will set up as many
as 35 forums across the province so citizens can
speak their minds: 'about amateur hockey in
Ontario.
Baeti claimed this was the best appraoach
and that government should not attempt to •
regulate or be involved with minor hockey,
except at an arm's length appraoch.
The survey may accomplish little if parents
are unwlling to talk openly about violence in
hockey especially if their children are involved.
Baetz was not convinced that violence is
widespread but rather isolated incidents tend to
mar the entire organization when generalized.
He added that if parents are deeply distressed
then the government will take action.
The Ontario Hockey Copnell has the authority
to rr ake new regulations.
