Support Your Local Red Cross" Legion gets five applicants BY NEIL SHAW The regular ,monthly meeting of Goderich Legion Branch 109 was held in the Jubilee Ronm. on Tuesday; March 6 with president, Roy Mugford in the chair. The Membership Chairman, Comrade Harvey Johnston, presented applications from Gordon MacDonald, Allan Brindley, Wayne Jessop, Grace MacDonald and Kenneth Hunter for Associate Membership in the Branch. These ' ap- plications were accepted as well- as 10 applicants for Fraternal Mem- bership in the Branch. The Membership Chairman reminded members that their dues must be paid this month or all privileges, in- cluding the subscription to the Legion magazine are cancelled. Letters in support of the opposition of the Legion to the relocation \ of . the Pension Com- mission from Ottawa to Prince Edward Island, were received from both the Dominion President, Ed Coley and our Member of Parliament, R. E. McKinley. The Branch moved to send voting delegates to both the• District Con- vention in Owen Sound on April 22 and the Provincial Convention in Sudbury from May 13 to 17. The Zone CI meeting will be held at the Legion Branch in Blyth on April- 1. - The Branch voted" to send a Legion Colour Party to the 125th Anniversary Parade in Auburn on. June 30. A Legion Colour Party will take part in the St. Patrick's, Day Parade in Bay City also. Branch 109 is co-sponsor of a trip to our sister community for this annual celebration. The meeting ledrned that two deactivated Browing machine guns have been donated by the Branch to the Huron County Museum. A motion was passed to have, the piano in the Jubilee Room refinished. and tuned. A plaque in- dicating its donor is to be attached. The excess bingo equipment owned by the Branc.h was donated to Westminster Hospital. The Branch passed a motion to support the Laketown Band this year to the extent of $1,000. The Sick and Welfare Committee reported the following members ip the hospital. In Westm in§ter - _ Bert Mohring and William McGill; in Victoria - Elmer Draper; in University - Archie McLean and William Wheeler; and in. Goderich hospital - Harold Hibbert, Ji_m Queen, Dave McMillan, Ben Wilcox and Steve Wilkes. The Chairman of Public Speaking, reported that three contestants representing the Branch won second prizes at the Zone Public Speaking Contest. The meeting learned from the Property Chairman that the new heating system will be completed. by the end of April at a cost of $40,000. A Nominating Com- mittee with Comrade Eric Johnstone as Chairman, will present a new slate of officers to the next general meeting in April.
