Oppression df peoples is nothing new; star- vation is something that has afflicted the world since its beginning. But, for the first time in history, mankind is able to do something about it. Modern communications can and do inform the world in a matter of minutes of every disaster that happens. And at once we know it is only a matter of hours . before help can arrive. How different from the past! Then, when word finally reached those who could help, often it was too late. Share Lent is the Catholic version of the effort being made among Christian churches in Canada each yearto answer the call for help from the millions of under -fed, under- nourished, poorly -housed people of the world. Who are these hungry, under -fed, poorly -housed people? Mostly they are people in. the rural areas of the under -developed areas of Asia, Africa and South and Central America. They are people living on the land that their ancestors lived on for centuries:- But they seldom have any control over the land that they occupy. In many instances the policies that cause such injustices are supported b the t y e go v rnmen . We cannot do anything directly to move the governments of the poor nations to recognize the rights of their own people to food and land. But we are in .a position to make 'our own Canadian governrnent conscious of the injustices that are so much a part of the world economic system. Only if our own government knows that- we, the Canadian people, support them will it put pressure on other governments to change their land and food policies.
