Lions advance to semi-final
The Goderich Lions
Pee Wees advanced to the
'B' division semi-finals in
the Goderich Lions
Young Canada Week
hockey tournament with
victories over Exeter and
Streetsville Friday. and
Saturday.
The Lions blasted
Exeter 7-1 in the official
.opening game of the
tournament Friday night
and got by Streetsville, 5-
3, Saturday afternoon.
• The Lions next game is
today (Thursday) at Z
p.m. when they take on
Kincardine in the semi-
fmals.
Goderich dominated
the game with Exeter
from the opening face-off,
scoring three unan-
swered goals in each of
the first two periods and
holding a 7-0 lead before
Exeter scored with only
30 seconds left in the
game.
Peter Stahl paced the
Lions with a three goal
performance. He also had
one assist. Daryl Madge,
Todd Graham and Paul
Brenner each had one
goal .and one assist for
Goderich. John Thom-
pson scored the other
Goderich goal.
Mike Tiedeman scored
Exeter's only goal when
his shot deflected off a
Goderich defenceman
into the net' in the last
minute of the game.
The Goderich victory
over Streetsville, an `A'
team in OMHA play, was
a much tougher game for
the Lions. Peter Stahl
was again the scoring
leader for the Lions with
his second consecutive
hat -trick. Trevor Erb and
Shawn Rahbek were the
other Goderich
marksmen. Each
credited with one assist
were Trevor Erb, John
Thompson, Peter Stahl,
Trevor Martin, Scott
Stokes,andDaryl Madge.
The Lions led 2-1 after
the first period and held a
4-1 lead at the end of the
second. Some excellent
passing and teamwork
were the keys to the Lions°
success in the game.
Terry Bean played a
strong game in goal for
Goderich.
Monday .-night, _ the
Lions played in the an-
nual Goderich-St.
Lambert,_
ue `ec
exhibition game and were
over -powered by a
tremendously strong St.
Lambert team, 10-2.
Manager Dougie Parsons
of St. Lambert labelled
his team as the best he
has ever had in the 23
years he has been
bringing teams to Young
Canada Week and the St.
Lambert team proved it
in an impressive per-
formance before a large
crowd here Monday.
To the Lions' credit was
the fact that they never
gave up against the much
bigger St. Lambert
tea, -n. They hJistled
throughout and displayed
some good passing plays
but were unable to finish
them off because of the
strength of the , Quebec
players.
St. Lambert jumped off
to a 5-0 first"period lead
but the Lions improved
their performance as the
game. went on, being
outscored 3-1 in the
second period and only 2-
1 in the final period.
Todd Graham scored
both the Goderich goals.
Trevor Martin assisted
the first and Mike
Brenner, who played well
in spot duty for the Lions,
assisted on the other.
The Lions' defensive
pairs of Shawn .Rahbek,
Scott Stokes, •Daryl
Madge and Trevor
Martin handed out some
-s.tiff--bodye-hee-ks- -to--the-
big St. Lambert forwards
and Randy Gaynor
played a strong game in
goal after coming in at
the midway point of the
game.

hockey - a tribute to the
close checking and good
goal tending of both
teams. Davey Jewell got
the scoring started when
he grabbed a loose puck
in front of the Hanover
net and fired it into the
top corner.A few minutes
later Todd Jeffrey put the
Suns ahead by two as .he
fired a hard shot from the
blueline that was so
nicely placed the goalie
had no chance.
About. a minute later
Hanover came back with
a good second effort to
poke a loose puck past the
Goderich netminder.
Goderich got a second
goal from Davey y Jew ell.
This time Ron Chapman
and Scott Garrow
combined to put Davey in
the clear and his hard,
backhand shot finished
the play.
With 1:53 left in the
game Hanover scored
again to put the pressure
on Goderich but the Suns
put on a fine show of
checking and control that
prevented, any Hanover,
comeback.
