semi- final with ry
exciting 2-1 win.

The Goderich Signal -
Star juveniles .reached
the semi-finals in playoff
action with an exciting 2-1
victory over Mooretown,
Saturday.
The win was the second.
of the series for the Stars
in the best -of -three affair
after their opening game
7-6 victory and boosts
them into the finals
against New Hamburg.
The first game of that
best -of -five series will be.
played in Goderich,
Saturday at 8.30 p.m. The
second game will te
played in New Hamburg,
Sunday.
After the Stars opened
the series with a 7-6 home
ice win, Mooretown
forced the deciding game
with a 6-4 victory in
Mooretown last Wed-
nesday.
Mooretown did the
damage in the final
period . of that game as
they lead 2.1 after two
. periods of play but out-
scored Goderich 4-2 in the
final 20 minutes.
Mooretown led 2-0 after
the first period but
Goderich narrowed the
disadvantage to a single
goal on' a'second period
goal vby Larry Daer.
Mooretown built up a 5-3
lead late in the game but
Dale Duncan scored his
second goal of the period
to again pull Goderich
within a goal.
Mooretown clinched
the win with an empty net
goal in the dying seconds
of the game to force the
third game.
The final game in
Mooretown, Saturday
produced all the drama of
playoff hockey and the
Stars were able to.escape
with a 2-1 win and a berth
in the semi-finals.
Duncan, who scored
two goals in the previous
game, provided the of-
fensive thrust for the
Stars scoring both their
goals in the game. He
opened the ga,me's
scoring at 9,03 of the
second period converting
a pass from Randy
Stoddart on a power play.
Mooretowntied the
game six minutes later on
a goal by Murray
Vrooman but Duncan
netted the winner with
just four seconds
remaining in the second
period, again on the
power play.
The final three minutes
of the game was played in
the Goderich end but the
Stars were able to
withstand the final
Mooretown siege.
One of the major keys
to the Stars success so far
in the playoff trail has
been steady goaltending
and Gerry Gaynor turned
in another fine per-
formance, Saturday.
Vikings
eliminated
in tourney
Members of the GDCI senior Vikings basketball
team, led by, coach, Phil Bugler, congratulate the
Timmins team after their loss in second round
action in the Ontario AA basketbsall championship
in North Bay last week. Under Bugler the Vikings
enjoyed a fine season defeating Stratford Central In
the WOSSA final by a single point. They lost both
their games in the Ontario tournament but are the

ice win Wednesday but
then fell behind 3-2 with a
6-4 loss in Mildmay,
Friday.
Facing elimination

The Sailors evened the
series at two games
apiece with a 4-1 win in
Goderich last Wed-
nesday. The game was a
dull, tight checking affair
that the Sailors led 1-0
after one period, 2-1 after
two and -then- wrapped
with two goals in the final
period.
Jim Hayter scored for
Goderich in thefirst
period and ,Ron Sowerby
scored in the second to
regain the Sailor one goal
bulge after Mildmay tied
the game early in the
period.

Merchants lead series with two wins

The Goderich Mer-
chants got right back in
their semi-final series
against Centralia, win-
ning two' games last
week.
The Merchants bombed
' Centralia 9-3 last
Thursday and then took a
2-1 lead in the.best-of-five
series with a 5-4 win,
Monday. Both games
were played in Huron
Park.
- The • Merchants
dropped the first game of
the series but the two
victories puts them one
game away from a berth
in the Intermediate C
finals. Zurich eliminated
Parkhill in three straight
games in the other semi-
final set and will filay the
winner of this series in
the final.
The fourth game of the
series "Will be played in
Huron Park, Thursday
and if a :Fifth game is
necessary it will be
played in Goderich,
Sunday or Monday.
Goderich broke the
second game wide open in
the final period scoring
six straight goals after
they were held to a slim 3-
2 advantage after two
periods.
Goderich led 2-1 after
one period on goals by
Phil Petrie and Paul
Corriveau and each team
added a goal in 'the
second period with Tom
O'Brien scoring for the
Merchants.
The Merchants put the
game away in the final
period with six straight
goals. O'Brien and
Corriveau added their
second of the game and
Cam McDonald added
two goals in the final 20
minutes: Frank Hagen
and Charlie Robertson
scored the other Goderich
goals.

the power play as
Goderich was assessed 13
minor penalties com-
pared to eight for Cen-
tralia.
The Merchants then
took a one -game lead in
the series, Monday with a
5-4 win on the strength of
a three -goal performance
by Brian Thompson.
Centralia took a 2-1
lead in the game early in
the second period before ,
Thompson turned the
game around., He scored
three straight goals with
the help of linemates
Petrie and Len KOlkman
and Dave Graf added an
unassisted goal to boost
the Merchants into a 5-2
lead.
Centralia refused to
give up and narrowed the
margin to 5-3 with la
power play goal with 13
seconds remaining in the
second period. They
pulled within a single
goal of,the Merchants
late in ththird period on
their second power play
goal. They also enjoyed a
man advantage late in
the game but were unable
to send the contest into
overtime.
Goderich was assessed
15 minor penalties and
one major for fighting in
the game compared to
eight minors for Cen-
tralia. Team officials
have been critical of the
officiating in the series
an lodged a protest
despite their two vic-
tories.
Mildmay regained the
series lead in game five
with a four -goal effort in
the final period to dump
the Sailors 6-4.

Ken Meriam scored. the
Goderich goals.
The Sailors nearly hung
up their skates for the
season Sunday as they
trailed 3-1 after two
. periods but played a fine
period of hockey in the
final 20 minutes scoring
three times to steal the
win, 4-3:
Rick Fremlin got the
Sailors right back in the
game early in th third
period sliding a
backhander into the
corner of the net to
narrow the Mildmay lead
to 3-2. It was 'Fremlin's
second goal of the game.
Just two minutes later,
Paul Kelly took a Duncan
pass on a two -on -one
situation and blasted a
shot into the top corner of
the net from a difficult
angle, to tie the score 3-3.
But the win didn't come
easy for the Sailors. They
had to kill a number of
penalties in. the final
period but won the game
on a goal by Duncan at
13.58. Duncan poked in a
rebound from close range
after a shot from the
point by Sowerby was
batted around the crease
area.
Ken Meriam saved the
game in the final period
when he was forced to
play goal for Juergen
Hellman who vacated his
postto clear an errant
puck.
Hellman,who went half
way to the blueline to
clear the puck, failed in
his attempt and put the
puck on a Mildmay stick.
Meriam covered the net
and blocked the shot
while on his knees and
managed to sweep the
puck into the corner while
in a prone position on the
ice.
Peewee B's
play Saturday
The Goderich Peewee
B hockey team dropped
the first _game of their
semi-final series by a
score 7-4 last Saturday.
The second game of the
series against St. Thomas
will be played in
St. Thomas Friday with
the third game to be
played in Goderich,
Saturday March 24 at 7
p.m.
The fourth game of the
series will also be played
in the Goderich Memorial
Community Centre,
Friday, March 30.

The GDCI Vikings lost
both of their games in the
Ontario• AA senior"boys'
high school basketball
tournament in North Bay
last Thursday and
Friday.
The Vikings lost their
opening round game by a
close 45-43 score to North
Bay Chippewa Thursday
and then were eliminated
from further play when
they were beaten 64-28 by
the Timmins Blues on
Friday.
Against North Bay, the
Vikings led 26-16 at the
half and 34-32 after three
quarters but "we ran out
of steam in the Last few
'minutes," coach Phil
Bugler said.
Dave MacKenzie
scored 21 points to lead
the Vikings.
In the game with
Timmins, Bugler said his
team "just couldn't buy a
basket." The Blues led 30-
13 at halftime and 51-26
after three quarters.
"We had enough shots
but they just wouldn't
drop," said Bugler.
Jon Barz led the
Vikings with eight points
while Dave MacKenzie,
who averaged 24 points a
game this year, was held
to five points.
Timmins was
eliminated in the semi-
final by the Niagara
District Trojans who
went on to win the
championship with a 54-
38 decision over the
Orangeville Bears.
Despite their early exit
in the Ontario finals the
Vikings had a fine year,
winning the first WOSSA
"AA" championship in
the history of the school.

O-.M.H.A. chain -pion -ship. The game last Wed-
nesday saw New Ham-
burg play much better
than in the first game- of
the series when they were
bombed 6 - 1 by the
Mustangs.
Goderich led 2 - 1 at the
end of the first period and
held a 3 - 1 lead after two,
but New Hamburg scored
two unanswered goals in
the third period, the
second coming with just
one minute and 13
seconds left in the game,
to force overtime.

assisted on Boyce's goal
which came on a fine shot
from the left side that hit
the far goal post and

gathe in the Mustang's
net, as did Jokic in the
New Hamburg cage.
Burger Bar evens
series with Sifto
Burger Bar erased a 4-1
Sifto lead scoring eight
goals in the final period
en rout to a 9-5 win in
CHHL semi-final action.
The come -from -behind
win was the first of the
series for Burger Bar and
evens up the semi-final
set at one win, one loss
and one tie. The fourth
and deciding game of the
series will be played
Sunday, March 25.
Goals by Tim O'Brien,
Dave Molson and two by
Wayne Draper had
powered Sifto into a 4-1
lead after two periods of
play. ,Len Kolkman had
scored the lone Burger
Bar goal in the first
period.
Burger Bar, facing
elimination, dominated
the third period scoring
eight goals to turn the
game into a rout.
Rob Standen led the
third period outburst with
a four -goal effort while
team-mate Terry
Schoemaker chipped in
with two goals. Brian
Thompson and Steve
White added single goals
for Burger Bar:'The winner of the series
will meet Sunset in the
CHHL championship
series.
