Town Council in Brief
BY SHIRLEY J.KELLER
Maitland Valley Marina Ltd. will get a jump on
the season , and has special permission from
council to begin - work on their project before the
proper agreement iS signed with the town.
Commissioner of works Ken Hunter explained
the agreement is complete except for some legal
definitions. He said it will be about two weeks
before it wll get to the council table, and the
marina developers would like to get started with
the dredging in the channel.
"They are anxious to get finished in time for
the season,". Hunter said.

Councillor's Stan Profit and Jim Searls were
-Opposed to inviting non-voting liason members
from Goderich Township and Colborne Township
to sit on the town's fire committee.
But the proposal by Reeve Eileen Palmer was
approved by council. Palmer said the . con-
tribution of these representatives from the
townships would be helpful until the Fire Area
Board becomes a reality.
Profit said it is a municipal committee and
-• should rem airr- that-way-despite-the--fact--that
Goderich Township and Colborne Township are -
now paying Member fees for fire protection.
+ ++
Once again Goderich Town Council is hoping
the Huron County Board of Education can be
persuaded to explain their annual budget to the
taxpayers.
A motion was passed at Monday evening's
council meeting that the town would "en-
courage" the board to "forrnulate a system of
public meetings in the municipalities, to explain
its financing arrangements".

A piece of property which has been maintained
for about a quarter Century by the Kirkey family
will be 'deeded to the family for the•price of the'
appraisal, the survey fees and legal costs, There
will be no cost for the land itself.
Deputy -reeve Bob Allen was opposed to the
motion and said he felt a nominal price for the
'Property .should be stated. He asked Reeve
Eileen Palmer, chairman of finance, to explain
why the town would not attach some price to the
property which was appraised at $2,000.
' "How do you explain that, in the light of the
financial situation in Goderich?" Allen asked
Palmer.
The reeve stated again that because the
Kirkeys had kept the property in good order for
some many years, the land should be theirs.
"It they were to put a bill into the town for an
'hourly ratethrough the' 25 Years, it would make
.minimum wage look good," said Palmer-.
The appraisal costs, legal fees and survey
costs will amount to close to $600, council lear-
ned.
"That's already more than the property is
worth," said Palmer.
Allen felt a nominal price of from $200 to $500
Should- Ne added to the $600. Council did not
concur.

Councillor Elsa Haydon got a negative reae-
tion when she suggested to council members
Monday evening that the first activity in the new
cultural centre on South Street should be a
council meeting.
Several council members looked at her in
unbelief.
"That has been suggested," said Haydon, who
announced that the required $50,000 has been
raised for the centre.
That brought a round of applause from council.
