tLater interviews with

activity. Everywhere,
' prayers. are being said.'
. And right after the
event:'`S.drvivors drop to
their knees in the mud

But one religious
columnist, writing about
the crash in his daily
paper column, criticized
the 'answer to prayer'
explanation. He pointed
to other air tragedies,

survivors, He argued that
who, survived -
simply hwed their lives to

What would Jesus'
attitude have been?
Back in His day,' a
construction accident•
took the lives of 18 men.
He rejected any in-
sinuation that these men
were bad guys who were
out of favor with God
(Luke 13:4).
And thus denied any
assumption that good
guys get special treat-
ment when it comes to
mechanical or ` natural
disasters.
Too many of us see God
as a good-hearted
Superman who always
catches His • friends
before they hit the
ground. But lets villains
come to a smashing end.
Superman winds back
time save Lois Lane's
inister'
stu
life. _
God must be able to do
the same.
Why doesn't He . undo
His people's hurts? Won't
He prevent their suf-
fering and death? •
First of all, let's realize
that God's definition of
tragedy is not the same
as ours.
To humans, death is the
ultimate horror or hurt.
But God sees sin as the
ultimate tragedy.
Mourners look at the
dead in terms of days not
lived. God sees the
situation in terms of sins
precluded and eternity
gained for all believers:
To God, it is not a
tragedy for Christians to
arrive in heaven before
their 'three score and ten'
are up. Nor is it a bad
thing for a hardened
sinner to be 'eliminated'
before he does more
hurting.
The headlines in
heaven read differently
from thuser oil earth:''
In addition, prayer is
not simply a4lting favors...
If God .is lust a, '.candy
dispenser activated by
dropping a wooden
prayer in the nearest slot,
then He's not the God 'of
the Bible.
Prayer is trusting
communication. Talking..
to Someone who is there.
To Someone who cares.
Not a lonely shout in the
desert.
But quiet trust in the
One who is beside you.
'Praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord. He will
save us,' expressed the
faith of one of flight 173's
passengers.
When we come asking,
it's best to ask for others:
'God, my children, my
children - they're too
young to die - please God,
if anyone's to die, let it be
me...'
The self-centred prayer
-'Please, Lord, save me!'
- usually is so,full of ego
that it fails to focus on
God.

The religious columnist
makes some valid points
in his criticism. But he
doesn't go far ,enough,
and one might conclude
he only believes in luck.
Mere chance doesn't
determine everything
that happens. The
universe is more than a
life and death game of
luck. •
God is always in con-
trol. Always allows,
prevents, or causes what
is happening.
Usually the first of
those.
Divine intervention in
the processes of life is not
constant, but infrequent.
He is present when
moral, spiritual, physical
and psychological events
lead to particular con-
sequences. He permits
such cause - effect pat-
terns because His con-
stant and arbitrary in-
terference would result in
a near neurotic world';
1God was. • alway,as

spiritual conseluences Of
life, there would., be ab-
solutely no security on

living. For example, how'
would you like, to face
even one day ' in . which,
God turned gravity on
and off depending on
whether or not one of„His
people were falling off a
building.
There are moral,
spiritual, physical and
psychological laws that
provide a 'norm' for
living. God will short -
,.circuit them only in
circumstances and for
reasons that He deter -
Thus there are times
when God will intervene
to help a lady find a lost
contact lens. But, not
every Christian who loses
a contact lens will get it
back.
Titus there are
miraculous healings -
even from dread cancer.
But, not every cancer -
ridden, praying Christian
is rescued from death.
Thus God does give His
people 'journeying
mercies.'- But that doesn't
mean that Christians.
don't die in car, bus and
plane accidents.

No Christian has a
secret code that insures
that God will always give
him what he wants. None
of the Lord's people can
expect preferential
treatment when it comes
to the diseases, accidents
and consequences of life.
True, God often given
us what we want. True,
there are miracles of
protection and rebirth
and renewal.
But that happens, not
because of what we do,
but because of what He
decides.
Picture 'yourself on a
death plane. Live or die,
what would you want to
be the last thing on your
lips?
A'gimme!'
Or an 'I love You.'
Prayer is telling God
that you think He's great
and thanking Him for all
He's already allowed or
done in your life.
Not some key card to
deliver you services that
He would deny to others.
Prayer:
°Oh, what a wonderful
God we have! How great
are His wisdom and
knowledge and riches!
How impossible it is for
us to understand His
decisions and His
methods! For who aong
us can know the )mind of
the Lord? Who -knows
enough to be His coun-
sellor and guide? And
who can ever offer to the
Lord enough to induce
Him to act? For
everything comes from
God alone. Everything
lives by His power, and
everything is for His
glory. To Him be glory
evermore' (Romans
11:33-36, LB).
