Chess club
moves to final
week of play
With only one week left
untilthe final standings
are determined and the
playoffs begin, various
players are battling to
qualify for the regular
standings. Steve Harding
presently in Level 1 needs
yet one more game to
qualify. Steve is also in
the running for the most
improved player award
presently in third spot
just 2.8 percent behind
Larry Gower. Larry
Gower played two games
last week to not only
qualify for the playoffs
but also take over the
lead in the Most
Improved standings.
Larry had a remarkable
increase from .333 last
year to .614 this season.
Another honorary
member needing only two
games to qualify is John
Kloeze. Tim Reid won
two of five games last
week and now only needs
one more game to make
the regular standings.
Tim has a real shot at a
third Level position.
In Level 1 play, Charlie
MacDonald won his only
game of the night while
Louis. Stadelmann won
two games to hold onto
second spot. Brian Miller
who is having a fantastic
season picked up three
more wins to move up
into third pollfition. Brian
has lost only one of 26
games!
Steve Hammill moved
back up into•the second
level 'by way of two
victories last week..
Steve could still overtake
Larry Gower for fourth
place.
First place in Level 3 is
really up for grabs as Bob
Fitzjames holds a mere
.001 lead over Kirk
Lyndon.
- In Level A- play Owen
Moriarty picked up two
wins to strengthen his
hold on first place raising
his percentage over the
.300 mark. Mark Mussell

move up into third place
raising his win -loss mark
over the .200 mark.

Health Unit surprises Foresters 4-3 in Industrial curing
Well ` it finally hap-
pened! The mighty
Forester dynamo blew a
fuse. After fifteen im-
pressive victories the
Forester foursome finally
got a free drink. The
team of the night was the
Huron Health Unit and all
four members of that
• squad played roles in the
dramatic 4-3 victory.
Don Hullah, Phil
Paquette, Laurie Ginn
and Jack MacKinnon
curled superbly as a team
and deserved the exciting
win. The final ends were
the deciding ends as
MacKinnon stole one in
the seventh to tie the
contest and then stole
another one in the final
end to clinch the upset.
In the final end each of
the Health Unit members
made their shots but the
last shot was left to
Forester skip Cani Bogie.
A difficult double faced
Bogie at the end and his
shot took out only one
rock leaving the winning
stone fully in the four
foot. Quick to share the
credit in victory, Bogie
was equally quick to
accept full blame in
defeat. "It wasn't that
hard a double, I should
have made it," said Bogie
as he sipped on his first
free drink of the season.
Another upset of sorts
occurred right next to the
Health Unit -Forester
conflict • as the steadily
improving GDCI Vikings
handed the slumping
Local 1863 their third
loss in the last four weeks
by the score of 10-4. Don
Coughlan was out-
standing for the Vikings
as they once again
capitalized on big ends to
gain an early "lead and
record their seventh win
of the season. Novice 1863,
members Bernie Koff-
man and Roger Bois..
received a rude initiation
to the League as the red-
hot Vikings refused to
give the union reps a
break of any sort.
Deal Mitchelmore
recorded her second
triumph as skip for the
Mitchelmore Family as
they downed Victoria and
Grey 8-5. According- to
Don i Mitchelmore, the
main reason for Del's
success is the fact that
she has a good vice -skip
but last week the entire
Mitchelmore clan curled
well and took full ad-
vantage of a few unusual
errors by V&G. V&G skip
Eleanor Erskine and
Pete Crew made key
shots throughout the
night but these were
generally matched or
surpassed by the -Big M
unit.
The string of major and
,.urur upsets continued
as the Victoria Teachers
handed the Assessment
Office a convincing 10-5
defeat. Barb Lade and
Marty Bond had very
good nights for the
educators while Jim Bell
was often forced to make
big shots for the
Assessment crew to keep
it close. There was a
rumour abodt foul play
since Assessment Office
allstar Sue Ritchie was
absent but Victoria skip
Ron Ritchie denied
playing any part .In his
wife's absence.
For five ends it looked
like the Elementary
Teachers might also be
involved in an upset as
they led .the Goderich
Legion 4-3 but three,
three -enders for the
Legion in the final stages
resulted in a 12-4 loss for
the educators. Phil
Turner •and Bill Duncan
were the big men in the
comeback while Donalda
Macdonald and Doug Yeo
were strong for the upset
teachers.
The 'upset trend,
however., was re-
established by Jim Bolan
as he led the Champion
.Office unit to an exciting
8-5 win over AM&G
Hospital No. 1. Bolan got
strong support from Jim

Kevin Rumi rolled a

place winners, Eager
Beavers, to help them

Fourth place Party "standings for, the second
Case took two points for a half of Foresters bowling,
Wiebe's 244 and Eric
Miller's 700 triple. Last
place Sexy Six had high
games by Doug Fuller -
228 and 584 triple.
George Robinson hit a
274 and 729 triple for third
Jack Thom's 611 triple. „ be one night of playoffs
Bob Rising hit a 255 and being held on March 17.
633 triple for eighth place
Riots giving them Live
points for a total of 28.
Fifth place. Odd
Couples had Dave
Team scored early and
never looked back.
Dennis Miskie was sharp
for the slumping Hospital
foursome who now find
themselves tied with the
Champion Girls Team.
The • ladies of the
Champion Girls team
have made some enemies
in the last two weeks b,ut
they have also
established "t'trselves
as the- best of the
Champion teams. Last
week they destroyed the
Champion Office and this
week they demolished the
masculine quartet from
the Champion Sales
Office 9-4. The key to this
victory rested with lead
Alma Vollick who started
each end off on the right
foot for the winners and
skip Sylvia Bolan who
•made many fine clutch
shots to give the
Champion girls their
sixth victory. Bolan's
most devastating shot
occurred in the seventh
end as the, Sales Office
was fighting back.
Having scored three
points in the sixth end the
salesmen sat four in the
seventh but Bolan calmly
(?") .drew through the
crowded . house to sit
squarely in 'the four foot
and seal the important
triumph.
Nothing seemed to go
right for the AM&G
Hospital No. 2 team as
they dropped a one-sided
13-2 loss to the GD CI
Teachers. Hospital skip
Elmer Taylor and lead .
Jennifer Matthews both
had moments of glory
including an excellent
double takeout by Taylor
They're all coming back!
