Ontario basketball final
BY TD
The GDCI Vikings won
the Western Ontario
Secondary School
Association senior
basketball "AA"
championship with a
thrilling 63;62 victory
over the Stratford Cen-
tral Ramblers Saturday
night in Stratford.
The Vikings reached
the final in the two day
championship tour-
nament with inspired
play ; in their 59-47 win
over Sarnia St. Pats in
the opening round and a
77-68 victory in semi-final
play over Woodstock
Huron Park. Stratford.
Central defeated
Strathroy 74-56 in the
other semi-final.
The final game bet-
ween the Vikings and
Central was a rematch of
-°the two teams which met
in the Huron -Perth
championship but this
time the Vikings reversed
the outcome on the Huron
Perth champs. The game
saw the lead change
hands 19 times and the
score was tied 10 times.
Central led by ane point
after the first quarter and
at halftime, but the score
was tied after three
quarters.
With seven seconds left
in the game and the score
tied, the Ramblers, in
possession of the ball,
took a time-out to set up a
final shot,_. The shot
missed and the Vikings
Bill Barwick was fouled
going for the rebound.
The clock showed three
seconds remaining in the
game when Barwick sunk
his first of two free
throws. That point put the
Vikings on top 63-62. The
Ramblers got the
rebound on Barwick's
second attempt, but time
ran out before they could
get into position for a
shot.
As WOSSA champions,
the Vikings advance to
the All -Ontario "AA"
tournament which begins
today (Thursday) in
North Bay.
Dave MacKenzie had 29
points for the Vikings
in the final against
Stratford. Jon Barz
added 14 and Dennis
Donnelly had 10. Bill
Bat -wick and Perry
Teichert had five points
apiece.
On the bus trip home
following their WOSSA
title victory, teammates
kidded Barwick about
scoring "only five points"
in the final, but one quick-
witted Viking asked the
kidders if they would
rather he had scored only
four.
The WOSSA - cham-
pionship is the first for a
Goderich team since the
team became an "AA"
school some years ago.
In their first round
victory over Sarnia St.
Pats, the Vikings
defeated the number two
school in Sarnia, ranked
only behind Sarnia
Central which is rated as
the number two team in
Ontario.
Dave MacKenzie had 21
points and Bill Barwick
had 19 against the
Fighting Irish. Jon Barz
added seven. Dennis
Donnelly, Perry Teichert
and Andy Moore all had
four points each,
Woodstock Huron
Park, the team the
Vikings met in the semi-
final, was the pre-
tournament favourite.
Woodstock had among
their laurels this season a
convincing victory- in the
Viking's own tour-
nament.
Viking coach Phil
Bugler felt his team
played the first quarter of
the semi-final as though
they were convinced the
Huskies • were the
championsalready, but
in the second quarter the
Vikings exerted more
defensive pressure and
challenged the taller
Huskies inside.
Bugler felt the turning
point of the game was
provided by the inspired
play of reserve Doug
Cruickshank who came
off the bench and
spearheaded the Vikings
,with a flurry of steals and
enthusiastic play. From
there, the Vikings never
looked back. Led by Dave
MacKenzie's 28 second
half points, the Vikes led
by as much as 18 points in
the final quarter.
MacKenzie wound up
with a whopping 39 points
for the Vikings. Perry
Teichert had 18.'Jon Barz

wick had five and Andy

The Vikings over-all
record stands at 20-7
following the WOSSA
Tournament. The
