Kids
love
classics
BY
CAROLINE E. CASS
Since earliesttimes
animal stories have been
favourites ' of young
children. In fact, Aesop's
Fables still provides the
pattern for modern-day
tales.
The Goderich Public
Library has a wide
selection of animal
classics from which to
choose, but one of the
most popular stories
today is the Paddington
series by Michael Bond.
You. initially meet
Paddington in A Bear
Called Paddington in
London, England at
Paddington Station. The
cuddly little bear arrives
from darkest Peru as a
stowa ay on a ship. The
Brown family im-
mediately adopts him.
Poor Paddington has
much to Learn about life
with a typically English
family. How does a bear
know you're not supposed
to wear the cream from a
sticky bun on your face?
How is a bear to know
taking a bath does not
include splashing the
entire room?
He causes a great
commotion at the beach
when he sails to sea in a
. bucket with the outgoing
tide! Fortunately, his
mistakes always end well
at the conclusion 'of each
chapter.
Children find Pad-
dington's escapades
thoroughly enjoyable.
The pencil drawings are
.appealing and Pad-
dington himself is an
adventurous, lo.vable
character.
Other titles in the series
are Paddington Helps
Out, Paddington Marches
On} Paddington at Work,
and More About Pad-
dington. Find -out how
Paddington manages to
get himself out of trouble
ineach of these books.
Maybe you'll want „ to
follow Paddington's
cooking advice in his own
personal cookbooks!
Because Michael Bond
is a British author, the
Paddington• stories
reflect a family with very
proper human qualities
and a hero who is a
gentle, loving creature.
Very young children
might like to hear the
tales read aloud and to
marvel at the pictures,
while readers eight and
up might like to read
them on their own.

One of Captain Comet's
buddies pointed out that
Alison Curran was listed
as the February winner.
Of course, Alison was the
January winner. We're
sorry about that error
and hape it didn't cause
too much confusion for
our January birthday
kids.
Brad Armstrong was one of many little skating
stars In Ice Nicks '79 held by the Goderich Figure
Skating Club on the'weekend. Here he keeps his
balance as he makes/his way around the rink.
