Corn growers
need voice
Ontario corn growers
desperately need a voice
for their side of the in-
dustry. A marketing
board for corn will do just
that and a lot more for the
farmer. That comment
comes from the ,newly
elected chairman of the
Provincial Corn
Marketing Committee,
Max Ricker.
The 48 -year-old Dun-
nville farmer announced
that the committee now
has a 12 -person board
with representation from
each region in Ontario
from the "great south-
west" to the "Ottawa
Valley."
"Right now the com-
mittee is spreading the
word about our proposal
and throughout 1979
public meetings will be
held for all Ontario corn
growers," explained
Ricker.
Here is how he
describes the proposal.
"The corn `board that
will work most ef-
fectively is a negotiating
type, styled after the
Soybean Growers Board.
By negotiating with the
elevator trade, drying
and handling charges,
equality and fairness will
be accomplished for all
growers. Better prices
will be realized by
negotiating premiums for
high quality corn. We can
also help the corn grower
by having a say in how
government stabilization
levels are set and we
March seed month
Although the cost pf
seed is only a small part
of the total crop
production cost, choosing
the right seed is one of the
most important decisions
of the year.
"March is the month
when most farmers
finalize crop plans, and
order seed," says Bill
Taylor, soils and crops
branch, Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food.
"Once these decisions are
made, and the seed is
planted, they have to live
, with the choices."
Cereals are planted
each. year, so farmers
can change varieties
annually. However,
pasture, silage and hay
mixtures planted this
year will be expected to
produce for several
years.
Fortunately, farmers
don't have to depend on
guesswork to choose good
seed, says Mr. Taylor.
Seed labeled "Certified
Seed' guarantees— seed
variety and quality.
• Certified seed, iden-
tified with a blue tag,
indicates that the seed
has been grown from
either a 'foundation' or
'registered', seed source.
This seed is inspected in
the field by Agriculture
Canada inspectors and
re -inspected . before the
bags are sealed as
'certified'. •
The tag .shows the
pedigree of the pahicular
seed lot and the
guarantee of genetic
purity.
Mixtures of cereals,
particularly oats and
barley are used ex-
tensively by livestock
farmers. Until recently,
these mixtures were not
available as certified
seed.
"Now these cereal
mixtures carry a green
tag, which guarantees
that the varieties in the
mixture were grown
separately as certified
seed," says Taylor.
"Plant breeders are
continuously working to.
improve yield, disease
resistance, and straw
strength," says Taylor.
"Farmers should take
advantage of these
developments by testing
some of the new varieties
in their own operations."

would also administer the
cash advance program.
Finally, since the Ontario
corn grower produces a'
surplus to the domestic
need, a corn board would
be a promoter of export
sales."
These are the benefits
to the farmer according
to Ricker.
Ever since the corn
board concept was
conceived by the Ontario
Federation of
Agriculture, and even
today, there seems to be a
misunderstanding by the
farmers about the
board's structure.
"I want to set the
record straight," em-
phasized Ricker. "This
board will not buy or sell
corn, nor will it set a
price for corn. The '
commodities market in
Chicago will provide that
function."

grower from the region of
Haldimand wants to
assure his fellow growers
that only when all
growers are informed
about the proposal will an
expression of opinion poll
be held to get the plan
legislated.

programs offered by the recreation department last season. Many new
programs are planned for spring and summer. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan)
