Recreation means
something different to
everyone. And although
you can't please all of the
people all of the time, the
Goderich Recreation
Department certainly
attempts to please most
of the people most of the
time by offering a diverse
range . of recreational
activities.
"We will try to offer
anything • that anyone
wants if an instructor and
a facility can be found
and if enough people
show an interest," says
Jane Netzke, program co-
ordinator with the
recreation department.
The department tries
not to duplicate night
school programs though,
explains Jane.
If there is a charge for
a certain recreation
program, 75 per cent of
the moneygoes to the
instructor and the other
25 per cent goes toward
advertising, rental fees,,
etc. Jane feels that the
programs are all offered
at very reasonable
prices.
Schools can often be
used by groups wishing to
practise sports. They
should be booked through
the recreation depart-
ment. The Community
Centre auditorium is
available for rent by
groups who want to hold
dances and other events.
It should also be booked
through the recreation
department, says Jane.
The recreation 1, -
department has applied
for ' an Experience '79
grant throught the
Ministry of Culture and
Recreation ' to offer
special events at dif-
ferent playgrounds and
locations throughout
Goderich this summer.
Some of these events will
include craft days,
puppet shows and- track
and field events. They
will cater to Certain age
groups at different times
and that way children
will only have to commit
themselves to one day at
a time. It's an . ex-
periment with a new
format, explains Jane,
because many children
go away on vacation with
their families in summer
and can't commit
themselves to week or
month long programs.
The recreation,
department is also
responsible for the
supervision at Judith
Gooderham pool and the
Goderich main beach for
the months of July and
August. One of the things
Jane herself likes best
about Goderich is its
proximity to water. She
says she would find it
very difficult to move
anywhere inland after
having lived here.
Jane was originally
hired by the recreation
department through a
Ministry of Community
and Social Services grant
in 1976 to set up and GO -
Ordinate a community
recreation integration
program for the mentally
handicapped. This in-.
volved the Leisure Buddy
program in which
volunteers (mostly high
school students) were
recruited to take men-
tally handicapped
children and adults to
recreation programs and
get them involved as
much and as often as
possible.
Funding for the
program ran out last year
but Jane has continued to
operate it through
donations and with the
help of 12 Leisure Buddy
volunteers. It is quite a
unique program and Jane
has been asked to speak
to several other towns
which are thinking of
implementing it.
Jane, a native of
TeeSwater, is a graduate
of the Recreational
Leadership Course at
Conestoga College in
Kitchener. She has
worked with the disabled
at the YMCA in Kitchener
and with the retarded at a
Kinsmen Centre
workshop in Kitchener
also. She has worked as
the co-ordinator of
Sportsfest for the Lake
Huron Zone Recreation
Association too.
In her present capacity
as program co-ordinator
at the Goderich
Recreation Department,
she has been busy
preparing another
brochure on the
recreatiq i programs to
be offered during the
March school break and
throughout spring and
summer. Everyone in
Goderich will be
receiving this brochure
.very soon, possibly this
week and Jane hopes it.
will make people aware
that there are activities
for them to join here.
"It seems to be so hard
to make people in
Goderich aware of•what's
going on. We send out
brochures, put up posters
and put ads in the paper.
and still people will say,
'I didn't know that was
going on'," laments Jane. .
