seven alternative con-
struction plans to bring
the system in line with
the lower growth rates
announced in Hydro's
forecast two weeks ago.
The presentation was
made by Chairman
Robert Taylor; President,
Douglas . Gordon;
Executive Vice -President
Planning and
Administration Milan
Nastich and Vice -
President - Power
System Program Arvo
Niitenberg.
As a result of the load
forecast, the panel noted
that Hydro would have a
surplus of between 15 and
25 percent for the period
up to,1988. This was over
and above normal
reserve margins.
When the forecast was
announced, Hydro or-
dered an immediate 'stop
and store' program at the
oil -fired Wesleyville
generating station near
Port Hope. The two -unit
station has a planned
capacity of 1;000,000
kilowatts.
Yesterday, the Select
Committee was given the
list of alternatives and
the panel discussed the
many variables
associated with each one.
Besides Wesleyville, the
stations which \could be
affected are the . coal-
fired Atikokan Plant in
'Northwestern Ontario
and the Bruce B and
Darlington nuclear
stations.
The cost of various
alternatives was
outlined; the effect on
manpower as well as
unemployment
generally; local com-
munity impacts and.
impacts on the' economy
as. a whole: As well, each
alternative has 'a dif-
ferent effect on the
surplus.
Members of the panel
said all alternative's must
be carefully weighed and
additional information,
not yet available, would
be considered before
Hy.dl e's . Board - ....--of--
Directors
-df--Directors makes ` its
decision later this month.
The panel also advised
the Select Committee
that a long-term study
shows that Hydro's
reserve margins could be
held at 23 percent to 25
percent without seriously
affecting reliability of the
Hydro
system. This too, will be
considered by the Board
of Directors this month.
Earlier calculations set
the reserve margin at 45
percent to 30 percent.
The lower reserve is
based on the assumptions
