The Sound of
Goderich '79
The. "Sound of
Goderich, '79" will have
an additional 'sound' this
year, a ladies' triple-trio
who are known as the
Craigellen Singers, under
the direction of Mrs. Ila
Worsell.
The group was formed
about three years ago for
a variety of reasons, the
main one being that the
women like to sing, and
enjoy treble harmony.
Mrs. Worsell, through
her involvement in
church and community
music, was often ap-
proached to .provide
musical entertainment
for various occasions.
From her association
with the former Goderich
Treble Singers,she in-
vited some of the former
members to make a
smaller group to sing at
various functions.
The group was en-
thusiastic, because they
missed Treblesingers
when it disbanded, and
they were eager to sing.
Most of the Craigellen ,•
Singers are also mem-
bers of church choirs in
Goderich •but the music
they are singing in this
group differs from choir
music, in that it is usually
arranged for three-part
treble voices, soprano,
second soprano and alto.
They learn a pleasant
variety of sacred and
secular music, keeping in
mind what the average
listener likes to hear.
They rehearse in Mrs.
Worsell's home, usually
beginning about a month
in advance of a per-
formance.
Their popularity has
grown and last year they
were kept as busy as they
desired; they sang at the
Cancer Daffodil, Tea, at
one of the --summer band
concerts in Harbour
Park; at North Street
United Church variety
concert; and at the:.
Masonic Ladies' Night in
Lucknow last fall where
their group • of Scottish
songs were a special
delight to the audience
that was predominantly
Scottish origin!
After this concert they
went right to work on
their Christmas music,
their first performance
coming on December 3.
They repeated their
Christmas music on four
additional occ.asions
during the month, of
December and they were
not reluctant to put it
away after the final date.
Mrs. Worsellgave
them a rest during
January then they began
in • February to prepare
music for the "Sound of
Goderich" , concert on
March 30 in the GDCI
auditorium. ,
On the .following night,
they will be singing at a
banquet in honour of the
Bluewater Chapter,
Order of the Eastern Star
who are celebrating their.
Silver Anniversary.
Mrs. Worsell is also
taking her Craigellen
Singers to Auburn for the
big variety concert on
July 1, on the occasion of
Auburn's 125th birthday.
This date is especially
dear to the heart of their
conductor, since she is an
Auburn native and also
named her singers in
honour of another native
of the village - her
mother.
For the March concert,
their songs vary from "I
Heard a Forest Praying
to "The Ocarina" (from
'Call Me Madam') and
will include spirituals like
"My Lord, What a
Mornin'."
Members of the
Craigellen Singers are:
sopranos, Ruth Bushell,
Helen Westbrook and
Betty Wilkin; second
sopranos, Jean Hanly,
Shirley McEwen and
Shirley McMillan and
altos, Roxie Adams, Lou
Bundy and Laurine
Madge.

morning. I. don't know
how she got up for school
so early in the morning in
Brazil," laughs Mrs.
Murphy.
'Lucia explains that her
mother had to start .
calling her very early for
school and had to keep
calling her after that.
Then she and a friend
would get a ride to their
high school in the car
with her father because it
was very far away. She
says she has never done
so .much walking in her
life as she has done here
going back and forth' to
school. In Brazil you have
to be 18 -years -old before
you can get your driver's
licence.
Lucia likes to swim but
says she is not very
sports minded. Brazil has
all . of the same sports as
Canada except for hockey
and skiing.
Lucia has visited the
U.S., Mexico,Venezuela,
Argentina and the
Bahamas as a tourist and
says she would some day
like to visit Europe.
When the Murphy
family went to pick Lucia/
up at the airport for her
stay in Canada, she
recognized them first
from a family) picture
which had been sent to
her. In Brazil almost
everyone has black hair
and brown eyes. She
loves the blue and
especially green eyes she
has seen here, she says.
When she showed the
picture of the ..Murphy
family to her parents,
they wanted the Murphys.
to send them little blonde
haired, blue eyed four-
year-old Maureen
Murphy.
Lucia is only
Goderich's second
foreign Rotary exchange
student. . Glen Murphy
was here last year from
Australia (he didn't like
the cold so well as Lucia).
Students '• must be
between the ages of 16
and 18 to participate in
the exchange program.
The program is becoming
better known in Goderich
these days as Mike Grace
and Janet Gardner
'prepare for their year's
living in Brazil • and
Australia (Janet says she
won't mind adjusting to
the climate of Australia
at all).
There's no question
about it. Cultural ex-
changes, like the student
-exchange program of-
fered by the Roata>ry
Club,benefit everyone all,
