The program, "Operation Provident", comes from the Preventive Policing Services of the Federal Ministry of the Solicitor General. Operation Provident is a' non-residential propelrty identification program, that will enable business owners to mark their property with a code number, in order that goods may " become readily identifiable in case of theft. The code numbers are available at most O.P.P. detachments or local 31. Operation Provident consists of a central numbering system developed to encompass the entire Dominion of Canada, including the North-West Territories. Each Province, with the exception of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and the North-West Territories, has been issued a dif- ferent Provincial Iden- tification prefix. The Maritimes and the Territories have been teamed with each other. How does it work? Very simply. Say a police officer in Manitoba checks a vehicle and discovers property bearing an Ontario "Operation Provident" number. He would know what province has that particular prefix number and further investigation would reveal the Police Commission, the police department and the specific business could then be identified. Who can use it? Any non-residential property owner. • Where can you get an • Operation Provident Number? From • the police department (O.P.P. or municipal) responsible for your jurisdiction. What can you mark "your goods with? Anything you wish but we do 'have several recommendations, depending on the article to be marked. Why should you use it? To protect your goods in case of theft, aid in crime prevention and help to put a thief out of business. When can you find out more about the program? As soon as you are in- terestedi Community Services Officers are available upon request, to explain the program to you. If ' you would like an . officer to attend a" meeting of a businessmen's association, we would ask that you allow three weeks notice because of their schedules. Help wanted As Mother Nature blesses the Goderich area with spring like tem- peratures people's thoughts appear to be turning to warm weather. The warm weather has also, brought about something else -the return of the robin. The bird of spring was spotted in .Goderich township this week in two spots. A pair of robins was reported by Noreen Straughanwhich she says may "give people the notion that spring is coming". She added that this is "pretty early" for robins to return. 12.
