Society
aims
for $9
million
A 1979 goal of $9 million
has been set by the On-
tario Division of the
Canadian Cahcer Society.
The objective in
Metropolitan Toronto is
$2,800,000.
The money raised will
be used to support cancer
research in Canada and
to finance programs in
public education and
service to cancer
patients.
Approximately 700
delegates from Cancer
Society units and districts
across Ontario attended a
two-day conference for
campaign and publicity
volunteers. The con-
ference, held at Toronto's
Sheraton Centre,
January 20 and 21, was
designed to help volun-
teers organize for the
April fund-raising drive.
Attending the con-
ference from this area
ev was Ross McDaniel,
Campaign Chairman for
the Huron County Unit of
the Canadian Cancer
Society.
He said, "I am con-
fident that with the
knowledge - and in-
spiration gained "from
this conference and with
the strong record of
cooperation that we have
experienced in our county
of Huron in the past, we •
will be able to reach our
1979.objective of $45,000.
"Defeating cancer is a
community responsibility
and- every citizen can
share in the fight against
this disease by sup-
porting cancer resear,
ch."
_Speaking to the
volunteers at the
meeting, Division
Campaign Chairman,,
John Ross of Toronto,
reported that the 1979
objective is $1.2 million
more than the objective
for last year. However;
he is certain that the goal
will be reached by the
"enthusiastic and
dedicated" campaign
team volunteers.
The weekend sessions,
having as a theme, "It's
Up To You", highlighted
the Cancer Society's
work in education,
publicity and service- to
patients through films,
video tape, slide
presentations and panel
discussions. Veteran
volunteers were on hand
to offer helpful tips on
organizing community
campaigns.
Along with the many
displays, district
workshops, and guest.
speakers, the conference
included discussions on
urban and rural can-
vassing.
Among the guest
speakers at this year's
conference were Mar-
vella Bayh, wife of
Senator Birch Bayh of
Indiana, Rev. Dr.
Richard Jones of Toronto
and. ,Dr. Martin. Lewis,
Department of.
, Pathology, Georgetown
University, Washington
D.C.
Others besides 'Mi.
McDaniel who attended
the conference from this
area were Jim
Remington, co-chairman
of the Huron County Unit;
Les Pitblado; rural
campaign chairman,
Goderich branch; and
Bill Bogie and. Eric
Moore, representing
Benmiller Court,
Canadian Foresters
