Suncoast Suns win champions:
at Seaforth atom tournament
+1.1h. nm
The Suncoast Suns
defeated Kincardine 4-1
in the championship
game last Sunday to win
the "A" series at the
Seaforth Winter Carnival
Tournament.
With a minute left in
the first period, Kelly
Alliri took a perfect pass
from Dave Telford while
playing .a man short and
beat the goalie to give
Goderich a 1-0 lead.'The
=Suns took complete
control in the second
period when Ron
Chapman scored on a
hard shot from the hash
marks with David Jewell
assisting.
'Three minutes later
Todd Gilchrist took a
pass from Kevin Telford
atcentre ice, streaked on
from the right side and
tucked the puck under the
goalie to make it 3-0.
Before the period ended,
Shawn Larder scored in
the top right hand corner
to make it 4-0 as Steve
Schutz and Chris Sideris
assisted. Kincardine got
one back at the close of
SP
the second, but were
stopped by Goderich
goalie Jay Williamson the
rest of the way.
The Suns, the only
undefeated team in the
tourney defeated Exeter
5-1 in the opener. The
localsmissed many
scoring chances in this
game but David Jewell
.got the Suns going,
banging in two quick
goals on perfect passes
from Scott Garrow in the
second period. Exeter
came back to make
things close and the score
was 2-1 after two periods.
Bud Todd Gilchrist
scored from a scramble
in front of the net early in
the third with Kelly Allin
assisting,
Darren Doak followed
this goal up shortly after,
with a tally on a shot from
the point. Before, Exeter
had regrouped. Todd
Jeffrey, who played a
very strong game, .also
scored from the point and
this was • the way the
game ended.
The toughest and most
exciting game had to be
the second game, a 3-2
squeaker over
Newmarket, David
Jewell, the Most Valuable
Player of the tournament
scored on a pass from
Todd Gilchrist with 55
seconds left to win it for
Grderich.
The game developed
early into a goalies' duel
as both the Newmarket
Netminder and Gpderich
goalie Jay Williamson
were called upon many
times to hold the op-
position off. The line of
Kevin Talbot, Steve
Schutz and Shawn Larder
who never had a goal
scored against them in
the whole tourney,
opened the scoring with
Talbot being put into a
bre-aka-way bySehutz. --
The big Newmarket
team got on equal
grounds before the first
period - ended and then
scored in the first minute
of the third period to take
a 2-1 lead. But Scott
Garrow made an out-
standing effort by
checking the Newmarket
RTS
defence, weaved
his, way past two
defenders and tied < the
score with a shot to the
corner with three
minutes left. Jewell's
goal made the Suns
happy victors • and
enabled them to meet
Kincardine in the first of
two games with the
Kincardine team.
In this first meeting
with Kincardine, it
wasn't until Jeff Scott,
the Goderich goalie in
this game, made two key
stops with Goderich
win ng 1-0, that turned
the—'game as the Suns
built up leads of 4-1 and 7-
2 before the game ended
7-4. David Jewell notched
four goals and an assist in
:this game: Scott-Garrow
had a goal and assist.
Kevin Talbot who , had
opened the scoring in
another game did the
same this game with
Shawn Larder assisting.
Darren Doak scored from
the point again with Steve
Schutz assisting to round
out the scoring.
Outside of the scorin
spree of the Jewell,'
Garrow and Chapman
line, combined with the
strong defensive play of
the Talbot, ' Schutz,
Larder line, hi-lites of
the tournament had to be
the penalty killing of
Dave Telford, Kelly Allin,
Todd Jeffrey and .Kevin
Telford in the cham-
pionship game. The of-
fensive blueline play of
Curt McPherson and
Chris Sideris kept
scoring drives alive the
whole tournament. The
1
work of Darren Doak in
his own end to get the
puck out of his zone was
outstanding. Ron
Chapman's, Dave
Telford's and Todd
Gilchrist's backchecking
efforts at key points in the
games, stopped potential
breakaways. It was the
consistent defensive
team play along with
steady goaltending from
Scott and Williamson that
made the Suns winners
and "A" Series cham-
pions.

Juveniles molded into contending.. team
BY DAVE SYKES
Despite a slow start to
the 1978-79 hockey season
the Signal -Star juveniles
have been molded into
-le-gititnate contenders in
the Shamrock juvenile
league.
The Stars added two
more victims to their
" recent winning streak
with victories over
Dorchester and Delaware
in Shamrock league play
last week. They dumped
Delaware 5-2 in Mount
Brydges last Tuesday
and rolled over Dor-
chester by the lopsided
margin of 11-2 in Dor-
chester, Sunday.
In Mount Brydges, the
Stars scored four second
period goals to snuff a
Delaware comeback and
win the game 5-2.
Goderich
held
a
one -
goal lead after the first
period of play and in-
creased their lead to
three goals in the second
period before Delaware
mounted a comeback.
Delaware_. scored two
goals to pull within one of
Goderich but the Stars
rebounded with two goals
in a 30 second span to
claim the win.
The Stars got their
entire goal production
from the line of Hugh
Hanly, Roger Lewis and
Larry Daer. .. • Lewis
scored the first three
Goderich goals and then
when Delaware put the
heat on, Hanly .and Daer
added insurance
markers. Daer added
three assists to his goal

witha pair of assists.
The . line was again
prominent in the second
game scoring six of the
team's 11 goals. Lewis
again scored three goats
wile ` linemate Hanly

Daer was credited with
four assists and, Hanly
three and Lewis°two.

Rawson scored -one goal
apiece. Chisholm, Leddy,

Goderich held a 2-0 lead
after one period and

period, trailing 5-2. But
the Stars offence refused
to let up and pounded
Dorchester goaltender,
Steve Rader, for six
unanswered goals in the
final period.
Next Sunday the Stars
will play in Lucan and on
January 31 they will
begin play in ' the
Mooretown Silver Stick
tournament. Their first
opponents in the tour-
nament will be Aylmer.

leg muscles to work for
cystic fibrosis research in
the Kinsmen third annual

The skiers raised over
$3,000 in pledges which
the Goderich Kinsmen

workshop sponsored by
the club,
The participating
skiers followed a 10
kilometre route from the
Zehrs parking lot that
wound through the

starting point. The skiers
collected pledges on a per

The ride was originally
scheduled for January 14

because of poor weather

Steelers impressive in Clinton
BY DAVE SYKES
The Goderich Lakeport.
Steel Bantams managed
just a single point in a
three game round robin
series in the Clinton
Bantam tournament but
the statistics are
deceiving.
The Steelers were able
to gain a tie in one of -the
games ,against Wood-
stock but their' spirited
play throughout the
tournament indicated
they were competitive
with any of the A and AA
teams participating in
the tourney.
It took some out-
standing goaltending to
keep Goderich out of the
'win column as they
controlled• much of the
play in their first two
games. They lost the first
game to . Preston 4-3 and
tied Woodstock 1-1 in the
second. In their final
game they lost 2-0 to
Georgetown, an AA club.
Despite losing by a
single goal to Preston the
Steelers held a wide
margin in play and had a
third period goal
disallowed that would
have tied the game.
Preston scored the only
goal of the first period
and carried that one goal.
lead into the final period.
Play opened up in the
final period and Preston
jumped into a two -goal
lead before Goderich beat
. Preston netrninder, Todd
Benninger for two goals
to tie the game.
Preston then scored
two goals in nine seconds
to take a, 4-2 lead and
Goderich pulled to within
a goal midway through
the period but were
• unable to tie the game.
Tom Smith, Rick Stahl
-and- David Gallow scored
goals for Goderich.
Goderich again was
unable to convert their
scoring chances into
goals in the second game
and settled for 1-1 tie
against Woodstock.
Mark Crawford put
Goderich into the lead
with first period goal
from Brad Armstrong but
Woodstock tied the game
with a goal early in the
second period to earn the
point.
The Steelers were
scheduled to play Milton
in the third game but they
were replaced by
Georgetown an AA team.

scored two third period
goals to win the game 2-0.

the" second period to hold
a 4-1 lead going into the

they got two goals from

Sailor win moves team
into share of first place
BY DAVE SYKES
The Goderich Sailors
have onceagain earned a
share of the division lead.
Despite an impressive
start to the current
hockey season in which
the Sailors jumped into
the division lead they fell
victim to a losing streak
that stripped them of the
lead: Until Friday night.
Goderich again
received a clutch three -
goal performance from
Dan Colquhoun as . they
dumped league -leading
Mildmay 8-6 in the
friendly confines of the
Goderich Community
Centre.
The win was,an im-
portant one fr the
Sailors as it moved them
into a first place tie with
Mildmay in their.
.division. A loss would
have put them four points
out of first.
The teams scored two
goals apiece in the first
period but the second
period set the tone of the
game as Goderich out •
-
stored Mildmay,5-2 to
hold a 7-4 lead heading
into the final period.
Mildmay outscored
Goderich 2-1 in the final
period but a last minute
goal by Wayne Rau
clinched the win.
Colquhoun scored both
first period goals for
Goderich while Scott
Parks,.Dan Duncan, Ron
Sowerby, Kevin Meriam
and Colquhoun scored
second period goals.
Wayne Rau scored the
eighth Goderich goal' in
the last minute of play
after Mildmay had pulled
to within a single goal of
the Sailors.
Juergen Hellman
played .a :strong game in
goal for the Sailors
stopping several Mild-
may shooters from close
range.
On Saturday the Sailors
participated in a tour-
nament in Milverton and
were eliminated in two
games.
In their first game at
on to play for the A
championship. They also
lost their second game, 4-
0 to Dresden on Saturday
and were eliminated
from further play.
However a bright pot
of the trip was a
showdown competi4ion
won by Sailor, Dan
Duncan. Duncan won
both rounds Saturday and
Sunday and copped the
$50 first prize money in
the final against Carl
Stanley of Lucknow. •
The Sailors return to
league action this Friday
with an 8.30 p.m. contest
against Wellesley in the
Goderich and district

The victory over
Walkerton was the first
for Goderich in three
meetings between the two
teams. Walkerton had
won the first two by
identical 2-1 scores, but
this time the Green &
Parent squad broke
Walkerten's tight -
checking style and
unleashed some scoring
power to gain the victory.

big gunner ifor Goderich,
scoring four goals ' and
getting one assist. Don
Elliott had a goal and an
assist while Ken Reid and
