Gertrude Kaittin •, corpeasp•ondent, 524-2076 Appoint Fisher The Colborne Township Recreation Committee meeting held in Colborne Township Hall, •Wed- nesday, January 17 had an encouraging at- tendance. President, Wm. Bogie unabte m1 e -p e -sent_._ due to other business commitments and the representative from township council, Grant MacPhee, opened the meeting. Glen Ribey, another re_ Rr entative from the council, also attended the meeting. On motion from the floor, Leonard Fisher was appointed chairman of the Recreation Committee and Mrs. Reg: Riehl is secretary for the following term. Former members of the committee com- mented on the various activities they have been engaged jn over the years and an interesting discussion brought the. decision to have softball' in Colborne Township again this - summer with Dan Willis and .Wm. Jewell° in charge. Over the years, the Colborne residents' children have certainly benefitted from , the swimming lessons. To plan for this, a meeting will have to .be held -with the Goderich Recreation Committee and Mr. Hoerni.g,who has given this his special attention for several years, will again be in charge. The possibility of having an open air skating rink at Benmiller ball diamond was • suggested and this matter will be receiving prompt attention. It will be reported on hopefully in the' near %tune.. The euchre card parties will be continued with the first card party this year to be today, Thursday, January 25 at 8 p.m. in Colborne Township Hall, weather permitting. Admission is 75 cents, ladies please bring lunch. A sincere thank -you to those who came' to the meeting and made it possible, to carry on and help in this work was voiced. Auburn Lions h Auburn and District Lions Club held their annual Ladies' Night in the Auburn Community Memorial Hall with President Lion, Bud Chamney in titre chair. The minutes were" accepted as read by the secretary Lion Bob Worsell on motion of Lion Bill Crawford and Lion Marinus Bakker. The guest speaker, District Governor Ron Finlay, was introduced by Lion Bill Crawford. He spoke on Lionism and . was thanked by Lion Randy Machan. District Governor Ron presented a Past President's pin to Lion Fred Lawrence with the President's 100 percent award. Mrs. Winnifred Girvin was in chargeof the meeting and opened with everyone reading the first two . verses of hymn 168. This year's theme for the church is "Amnesty". Mrs. Girvin then gave the definition of '!Amnesty and Pardon" followed by a reading on "Human Rights". A discussion then followed. Mrs. Girvin read a poem, "Everyone's the Same" followed with a poem by Mrs. A. Kerr. by Mrs. A. Kerr and Mrs. H. Citizenship and World Affairs was the study 'at the Auburn Women's Institute meeting held last Tuesday in the Community Memorial HaLLwith convenors, Mrs. Beth Lansing and Mrs. Oliver 'Anderson in charge. Mrs. Lansing gave. an interesting account' on how to ' become a Canadian citizen and outlined the' questions' 'that new Canadians answer when they apply for, their Calradian citizenship. She also had a, quiz on how well do you -know •dyour ..representatives . at. ,township, county councils and also federal and provincial • governments.• Mrs. Kenneth McDougall won the quiz. Mrs. Anderson spoke on World Affairs and gave the highlights of five • 1978 men of the year, the first one being Teng Hsiao Teng, vice -premier of China. OBITUARIES Members of St. Mark's Anglican Church learned of the death of a former. rector (1965-1968), Rev. E. Gladstone (Peter) • Pakenham of 105 Cherry Hill Boulevard, London. in his 81st year at the Westminster Campus of Victoria hospital. He is suryjved 'by his wife, Anne (Pocock) (Powell) and step- children Jack and Beth O'Bright of Thamesford and their three children, John, Genyne and Sara. A memorial service was held last. Thursday at the Beattie Funeral Home in Clinton for Mrs. Arthur Hallam who passed away in Clinton hospital on January 13. Besides her• husband, she is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Jim (Grace) Cartwright of RR 3, Blyth, Mrs. Evelyn Caldwell of Goderich, Mrs. Lois Rueger of Exeter, Mrs. Elmer (Betty).
