Although the new The rapid increase in farm -gate prices which began in September is now tapering off. Farm - gate prices in December rose 0.9 percent com- pared to 1.2 percent the previous month. The moderation in prices during December was due primarily to beef prices declining by 0.9 percent. Pork, however, was up by 4.7 percent and poultry prices rose by 1.0 percent. The Farmer Price Index (FPI) now stands at 17.5 percent 'above" last year. The year-to-year increased were, led by beef up 35.7 percent from the preNsiously depressed prices. Other meat was up 46.1 percent, pork "up 20.5 percent and poultry up 12.8 percent. Price increases for other major commodities were well below the general rate of inflation. The FPI, with 1971 equaling 100, now stands at 203.2. Aux. holds pot luck meal The January meeting of the Goderich Ladies Legion Auxiliary began with a pot luck supper. The "'colourful array of goodies was extremely tempting to the 48 members present. A short memorial service honoured Mrs. Laurena Bloomfield. Isobel Chamney was initiated as a new member. The attendance draw • was won by Ann Anderson and the mystery draw by Marg ,Mabon. Among the future plans discussed were many and varied sporting and social events. In par- ticular, a party just for the Auxiliary members on the evening of Tuesday, January 23 was discussed. Brookside Broadcast BY JANICE POLLOCK AND MANDY MILLER On Wednesday, January 10, Mr. Kopas, head of the guidance department from F. E. Madill Secondary School, came to the school to chat with the Grade 8 students who will hopefully be going to F. E. Madill next year. He told the students about the different courses and sonie decisions that would have to be made. On Tuesday January 16, the parents ose children are going on •to Secondary School in Wingham will meet at Brookside School at 8 p.m. to talk with Mr. Kopas aid other teachers. On Thursday, January 11, the pupils who will be attend- ing Goderich High School went to listen to the teachers explain their courses and to get a tour of the school. There was a good attend- ance.,, The Senior Girls, Senior Boys, Junior Girls and Junior Boys teams are in full swing in the intra mural volleyball. In a few" days the ping pong tournament will be starting for the students who have signed up.
