"It's important just to do things like that to permit the handicapped to function normally." HELPLESS NOT HOPELESS Larry Parker has lived all his life dependant on others for just about everything. If he can't do something using his mouth he has to have some help to' get it done. Larry has a disease that denies him the use of his arms and legs. The disease is a birth defect but Larry has learned to live with his handicap. He knows what his physical limitations are and can live with them. As he points out he "can't of -- ford toget depressed". But Larry is a shining example of what can be done in 'life if a person puts their mind to it with tilt_ determination to succeed. Larry has several degrees he ob- tained in university, he is an employee of the March of Dimes and he is an accomplished artist. The only thing he can use to paint with is his mouth so he learned mouth painting. "-I have an aide that is. with me 24 hours a day seven days a week," he said. "Without her I• would have to remain in an institution but with her I can lead a productive life." Larry. does not want sympathy he just wants people to realize_that even the most severe handicap can be over- come to a certain extent. He realizes that many things in life are beyond him but adds that many things are within his abilities and rather than be defeated he is -able to make the best of a'bad .- thing. He points out that he. doubts if there is a place in the mall where a •- person confined to a wheelchair can go to the washroom. It is a matter Of fact type of comment that sounds like he ex- pects there to be no washroom that a han- dicapped person could use. But he points out that if more people considered the plight of the han- dicapped life would be a lot easier for him .and thousands of people like. him. "We'd just like people to --be -a little more aware," he said.
