Perry Teichert led the Vikings with 21 points. Andy Moore hit for 17 points, Dave MacKenzie had 14 and Bill Barwick got P. Jon Barz added six, Joe Moore got four and tennis Donnelly and Tom Doherty each had three points for Goderich. Danny Freeman with two points and Mark Alexander with one, rounded out the Viking scoring attack. Steve Hart and Frank Padilla had four apiece for St. Marys. The Vikings also won two exhibition games in Sarnia Saturday, defeating SCITS 53-36 and edging St. Clair 48-46.. The Vikings jumped off to a 22-6 first quarter lead against SCITS, played even basketball over the next two quarters and put the game away with a strong fourth quarter. Bill Barwick was the top Viking scorer with 19 points, Dennis Donnelly, Dave MacKenzie anti Perry Teichert all had eight points. Andy Moore hit for six an, -1 Jon Barz added four points. The Vikings trailed by as much as 14points against St. Clair, but a fourth quarter raily pulled them even with less than one minute remaining and scored at the buzzer to win. Dave MacKenzie, with 15 points, and Jon Barz, with 14, led the Vikings. Perry Teichert had eight, Bill Barwick seven, and Dennis Donnelly and Andy Moore two apiece for the Vikings. Coach Phil Bugler expressed his Pleasure with the improving play of his Vikings since the Christmas break and credited the offensive production of Perry_ Teichert and Bill Bar- wick with taking some of the pressure off Jon Barz and Dave MacKenzie and allowing them to play more defensively. Bugler called Andy Moore probably the most improved player on the Viking squad. Ile has Luifie ulf the bench to score some key baskets and give extra reboun- ding strength to the Viking team. Vikings win fifth straight BY T D The GDCI junior Vikings extended their unbeaten streak to five games in Huron Perth Conference boys basketball action here last Thursday when they hammered St. Marys, 62- 23. The Vikings controlled the game with a com- bination of. a full court press, man to man defence and a zone press and scored almost at will. Jim Costello scored 14 points to lead the Vikings. Mike Wedlock and Phil Aubin hit for 10 each while Mike Murphy and Rob. McDonald had seven ap1ece. Andy Masse -added six, Ted Doherty got five points and Steve Gallow got three for the winners. Brad Scheurrnan was St. Marys' best with 14' points. Next league action, for coach Lynn Meyers Vikings is today (Thursday) in Exeter, The Panthers have defeated the Vikings the last two seasons so the GDCI squad is looking forward to a good game there. The Vikes split a pair of exhibition - games in Sarnia Saturday, losing 47-40 to SCITS but defeating Sarnia Central, 63-47. Coach Meyers- felt his, teams's loss to SCITS could be attributed 'to a height disadvantage and the Vikings own lack of hustle. The Vikes came up with an improved effort in the second game to take Central by a 16 - point margin. Wrestling team splits bouts in four team meet BY TD The GDCI wrestling team lost to South Huron and Stratford Central but won over Stratford Northwestern in quad - meet in Exeter last Wednesday. Bob Tigert, Bill Tigert, Brian Reed and. Chris Wood won bouts against South Huron. Del Bedard, SPORTS Randy Anderson, Brian Shewfelt Rick Carman ane*Chris Wood won against Stratford Central opponents. Against Northwestern GDCI winners were Del Bedard, Mark Carman, Brian Shewfelt, Bill Tigert, Chris Black, Rick Carman, Brian Reed and Chris Wood. The Vikings'record now stands at two wins, three_ losses and one tie, good for third place in Con- ference standings. Two Viking matmen placed well in a tour- nament at Sarnia Nor- thern in Sarnia Saturday. Ray Stanton was fifth in the 47.5 kilo class and Brian Shewfelt was third at 54'kilos. The Mustangs travelled to' Hanover last Tuesday night with some of the Clinton midgets in the line-up as the Stangs are hampered by injuries and the flu. Goderich won the game by a lopsided margin and will play Exeter today.(photo by Dave Sykes) Lions to defend Legion crown The Goderich Lions PeeWees split a pair of games in WOAA hockey action last week, drop- ping a close 8-7 contest to Listowel n Listowel Thursday and defeating Kincardine 5-2 here Saturday. Those results leave the Lions with a record of 13 wins, four losses and two ties in league play. The loss to Listowel came in the last meeting of the two teams in the regular • schedule. The Lions had swept,the first three • games with the Cyclones but this time Listowel outscored Goderich 3-1 in the third period to overcome a 6-5 lead held by the Lions at the end of two periods. Goderich got a three goal • effort from John. Thompson and • Peter Stahl scored twice for the Lions. Daryl Madge and Nick Trebish we're, the other Goderich goal - getters Daryl Madge and Rob Gibbons 'each had a pair of assists for Goderich. Trevor Erb,, Trevor Martin and Deavid Day each had one assist. The Lions came up with a much stronger effort against Kincardine, jumping off to a 5-0 lead in the first period. Daryl Madge had two goals and an assist to pace the Goderich attack. Paul Brenner, David Day and Peter Stahl each scored one goal for the Lions. Shawn Rahbek, Robbie Gibbons and John Thorn pson had assist's,.. Goaltenders Terry Bean and Randy Gaynor both played well for 'the Lions. , Kincardine got both their goals on power play situations in the third period when the Lions ran into a rash of six penalties. Jamie Emmerton and Mich Landry were the Kin- cardine goal scorers. This weekend ,..the Lions will be competing in 'the Royal Canadian Legion' Zone Cl Tour- nament in Blyth. They meet Kincardine in drr A ' di -Osten game at - 1:45 Saturday. The winner of that, game gets a bye into . the 'A' championship Sunday against Wingham, Seaforth, Clintdn or Exeter, the other '.A' entries. The 'A' winner will play the '13' division winner for the Zone Cl championship, also on Sunday. Blyth, Ripley, Howick, Hensall, Brussels and Lucknow are the 'B' entries. Goderich is the defending champion team in the tournament, having_won-last year in Exeter. Sunday, the Lions played an exhibition game against the Bantam 'B's, and lost 4-3. The game was a good workout for both Goderich teams. Greg Lapaine scored, two goals to pace the Bantam B's. Ron Stod- dart and Scott' Profit were the other Bantam goal scorers. Grant Garrow and Trevor Erb had a goal and, an assist each for the Lions. Paul' Brenner scored the other -Lions' goal. Nick Trebish and Daryl Madge had single assists for the Lions.-- erchants tie Hensall BY DAVE SYKES The Goderich Mer- chants got two goals from lz,)hil Petrie in the final period to gain a tie against Hensall in SHHL Intermediate C action here Monday. Petrie scored midway through the final period to pull Goderich within a goal of Hensall and then pulled the Merchants into an 8-8 tie With an unassisted effort with Seven minutes remaining in the game. It was an important point for the Merchants in their battle for first place with Parkhill and Zurich. The tie was the first of the season for the Merchants and boosts their season point total to 27 on the strength of 13 wins. They have lost only four games. • Goderich held a 3-2 lead after the first period of play on goals by Ron Corriveau,Paul Corriveau and Cam McDonald. They built that lead up to a three goal advantage in the second period before Hensall retaliated with a five goal outburst. Trailing 6-3 Hensall beat Goderich goaltender Doug Spitzig for five straight goals before the end of the period to hold an 8-6 advantage after two periods of play. But the Merchants were able to hold off the momentum built up by Hensall in the second period and tied the game with Petrie's goals. Ron Whetstone and Phil Paquette with two goals, were the other Goderich scorers. Goderich took five of the eight minor penalties assessed in the game and Hensell scored on two power plays. The Merchants have a busy schedule this week as they will play in Centralia, Thur- sday ;Thedford, Sunday and return to Goderich Monday for an 8.30 p.m. game against Kettle Point at the Goderich Community Centre. • GDCI to host Midget tourney BY TD The GDCI First Annual Bluewatert lassie midget boys basketball tour- nament will be held in the GDCI gyms, Saturday. • Tournament coor- dinator Myles Murdoch has lined up some of the best midget teamslo the area., London's '3tAnting Broncos, Tillsonburg Glendale Griffins, ,the Ingersoll Collegiate Bombers, Owen Sound Westhill, Stratford Northwestern Huskies, and the ' Kitchener St. Jerome's Lions will compete, along with the) host GDCI Vikings. The Vikings meet Banting in the opening game at 9 a.m. Action continues throughout the day with the consolation final at 7 p.m. and the championship final at 8:15 p.m. Murdoch, who feels his ' Vikings have a good chance to take it all, is hoping that the students of GDCI and the elementary schools •will support the Vikings in the tournament. OMHA rules on appeal The executive of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association, through its Secretary Manager Vern McCallum, 'has informed the Goderich Minor Hockey Association that its appeal against being re -categorized from 'BB' to 'A' has been upheld. This means that in the OMHA playoffs, which begin in early February, Goderich teams will compete in the "til3" division, the same division in which they were classed last season. Dick Madge:who acted as spokesman for the GMHA at the. appeal hearing in Cambridge, expressed satisfaction with the ruling adding that it was the only logical decision open to the 0M1 -1A. The appeal entered by the GMHA centered around the age distribution of the town's population, the drawing area of the association,., the number of players registered in the GMHA and the manner in which the Western Ontario AthletiO Association executive had dealt with the re-classificatiton.'
