JANUARY 11 1979 . m Meeting set for potato growers Agriculture and Food Minister Bill Newman has announced that an expression off opinion poll of fresh potato growers will be held on Wed-. resday, January 3E Growers will be asked to consider a proposal to establish a promotional marketing plan for the province's freshpotato growers. The proposed plan excludes potatoes sold for processing or as certified seed and exempts a grower or a group of growers who produce less than five acres of potatoes. Newman has asked the Farm Products Marketing Board to conduct the poll in the Ministry's field offices thi oughout the province. Growers wishing to vote on the proposal will be asked to sign a declaration that ._th.ey have grown and sold not less than five acres of potatoes on the fresh market in 1976, 1977 or, 1978. Letters will be sent to fresh potato growers outlining the details. The wording of the question to appear on the ballot is as.follows: "Are you in ,favour of the proposal to establish a Fresh Potato Marketing Plan for the purpose of development and promotion of the Ontario fresh potato industry?" Lousy time for lice It's lousy time of year • for cattleandcattlemen?.-:- Lice infestations result in unthtifty cattle, and cut• into cattlemen's profits. "Lice cause more problems during the winter 'than at any other time of the year," says ,John Forsyth, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food beef cattle specialist. These irritating parasites reduce feed efficiency and in severe - cases can cause anemia. A heavily infested animal can gain 1/2 to 34 of a pound less per day .than'a louse -free animal. Combined` with other winter --stresses; lice can pose a costly_ threat to cattlemen. Unthrifty animals suffering from lice infestations can become victims of cold weather, shipping fever, and diseases that healthy , animals are able to withstand. Cattle are susceptible to two. types of lice. Red lice feed on the skin of the animal causing itching. They seem to prefer the area along the animal's back line. Blue lice suck the blood, and can live on the animal unnoticed for some time. They are found primarily on ..the brisket, neck, shoulders, and around the base of the tail. "Cattlemen can control . lice in their herds by checking animals every two weeks and treating infested animals," says Forsyth. .. "Many. producers treat for lice on a routine basis to avoid any build-up in the lice population." To inspect an animal for lice, part the hair On the back. and examine the area with a flashlight. Warble control products provide a good start to a louse control program, but cattle treated for warble grubs in the •fall must not be overlooked in a lice control program. Louse control treat- ments include back rubbers (mixtures of oil and insecticide), sprays, , dusts, and pour -on systemic insecticides. Consult factsheet 420-653, Fly and Louse Control on Beef Cattle, for recom- mended products.
