The Goderich Lions
Pee Wees chalked up two
more victories in WOAA
hockey action last
weekend, blasting
Listowel 11-3 here
Saturday and edging
Walkerton 4-3 in
Walkerton Sunday.
The victories give the
Lions an impressive
record of 12 wins, three
losses and two ties in
league play:
Against Listowel,
linemates Peter Stahl
and Daryl Madge both
had six point nights. Stahl
had five goals and one
assist while Madge
reversed the figures with
one goal and five assists.
John Thompson had a
three goal hat -trick for
the winners. Grant
Garrow and Trevor Erb
each tad one goal and
two assists. Scott Stokes
' • had a pai•of assists while
sing.le.. '.assists . _ were

The Lions led 3-0'after
ro'the first period and held
an 8-1 lead after two
periods. They outscored
the visitors 3-2 in the third'
period.
Sunday's game in
Walkerton was a first
rate contest, with both
teams skating hard and
sticking to good hockey
throughout.
Pete^ _Stahl Lbr
- Goderich and Fergie
Chapman for Walkerton
each scored two goals in"
the first period. Mike
Brenner and - Todd
Graham assisted on both
of Stahl's goals.
Todd Graham put
Goderich into the lead
again in the second
period, assisted by Stahl,
but Glen Elliott came
back for Walkerton to tie
it up.
John Thompson got the
winning goal for
Goderich with 2:17 left in
the third period. The
Lions were playing
shorthanded at the time.
A shot by a Walkerton
defenceman bounced off
Daryl Madge's shinpads
and he and Titbmpson
broke away. Thompson
used Madge as a decoy
and beat the Walkerton
goalie with a high shot to
the corner.
Both goalies,'Terry
Bean and Randy Gaynor,
played well for the Lions,
with Gaynor making a
key stop on a shot from
the point with three
seconds left on the clock.
The Lions showed a lot
ut nusiie and desire in the
Walkerton game, which
was the final one of the
schedule between the two
teams. " ..
The Lions won two and
tied two with the
Walkerton team, a top
contender for League
honours.
The Lions played in
Listowel Thursday, and
meet Kincardine here
Saturday at 5 p.m.
Kincardine is another
challenger near the top of
the standings. In their
only meeting so far,• the
Lions edged Kincardine
5-3 in Kincardine in mid-
November.

took over mid -way
through the third period
when Chris Starkey
rushed twice to score two
goals against the Suns
who were playing with a
man advantage. The
Atoms- put on a strong
push for the last' two
minutes but couldn't
even -t-he- score.
Congratulations are due
to both teams for their
hard -skating and good
team work.
Saturday and the. Steelers
dropped a tough 3-2
decision to Walkerton in
Walkerton, Sunday.
Hanover took the
momentum away from
Goderich Saturday after
the home club had scored
two quick goals in the
third period to tie the
game at 3-3. Hanover
reversed the momentum
with the winning goal
with less than five
minutes remaining in the
game and scored their
final goal into an empty
net.
Goderich scored the
only goal of the first
period in that game but
Hanover reversed that
trend with three• unan-
swered goals in the
second period to hold a 3-1
lead heading into the final
20 minutes.
The Steelers put
themselves back in the
game as Jim Mathers
and Kevin Campbell
scored within a minute to
tie the game only to have
Hanover score two goals
before the close of the
game,
Mathers scored two
goals for Goderich and
Campbell added the
other.
Jeff Speer and Steve
"'S"wansen scored two goals
each for Hanover.
The Steelers lost their
second consecutive close
game Sunday as
Walkerton scored three
goals in the second period
to win 3-2.
There was no scoring in
the first period and all
five goals were scored in
the second. Walkerton
opened the scoring just 30
seconds into •the period
but Darrell Graham and
Jim Young scored before
the period was . three
minutes old to boost the
Steelers into a 2-1 lead.
It was a game of quick
goals h owever and
midway through the
second period Walkerton
countered with two goals
in two Minutes to ctaith
the win.
Each team enjoyed two
power play opportunities
in the final period big
were unable to score.
There were six minor
penalties handed out to
each team overall.
-This coming weekend is
a busy one for the
Goderich bantams as
they will play three
tournament games in
t,tenLun and one league,
game.
In the Clinton tourney
they play Preston
Thursday; Woodstock,
Friday and Milton on
Stlnday. Saturday they
will host Mount Forest in
a 6:30 p.m. contest at the
Comm anity Centre. A
win in that game will
count as four points in the
standings.
Sailors streak
continuesdrop
sixth game
BY DAVE SYKES
The plight of the
Goderich Sailors could be
likened to that of the
Toronto Maple Leafs.
Despite an impressive
start in the 1978-79
campaign in which the
Sailors jumped in front of
their division in the
Intermediate C league,
they have been hard
pressed to earn a victory.
The slump continued
for the Sailors on the
weekend as they dropped
an 8-7 decision to the
Lucknow Lancers in
Lucknow, Sunday. The
loss was the sixth straight
for Goderich.
But the Sailors played a
strong game although
they were forced into a
come -from -behind' role
early in the game. And
they almost made it tying
the game at 7-7 with four
minutes remaining in the
game only ° to have
Lucknow score the
winning goal with two
minutes left.
Thee Lancers .jumped:
into a 2-0 lead after the
first period' of play on
goals by James Murray
and the teams abandoned
17
a defensive style of play
in the second period with
Goderich . outscoring
Lucknow 5-4 to trial by a
single goal aftere' two
periods.
Lucknow increased
their lead to two early in
the third period but the'
Sailors got third period
goals from Dan
Colquhoun and Ken
Meriam to tie the score'
with four minutes
remaining in the game.
But Carl Stanley com-
pleted his hat trick by
beating Jurgen Hellman
with the winning goal at
17.51.
Dan Duncan and
Meriam led the Sailors
with two goals each while
team-mates Mel Horner,
Graham Hamilton and
Colquhoun added one
goal apiece.
Stanley and Murray
provided the Lancers
scoring punch ' scoring
three goals each. Two of
Stanley's goals came in
the final period.
The Sailors will be
looking to halt their
losing streak on home ice
Friday when they en-
tertain division rivals,
Milverton -in an 8:30 p.m.
game:,
