GODERICH SJGNAL-STAR, THURSDAY, JANUARY 4 , 1979—PAGE 15
The past year was also
an outstanding ,one for
soccer in Goderich.
Soccer is perhaps the
fastest growing sport in
North Americaand the
growth in Goderich
paralleled that 'claim.
This year there were
155 boys and girls bet-
ween the ages of 5 and 14
C'ord's Sports left fielder, Warren Watt may not _
have stolen second base on this play against
Canada Company but the Sports stole the Industrial
League Championship by sweeping the final series
against the Company in three straight games.

It was a rather:strange
year in the Goderich
Industrial Softball
league.
The _.top. wo teams in
.both divisions—bowed
from the 'playoff scene'
and Gords Sports won the
league championship,
defeating Canada
Company and their one-
-time pitcfier, Stan
Doherty.
Doherty had retired
from the league but
°•'came back to play' for the
young Company team. He
led the team • to a second
place finish
n
the Dunlop

Division s on •but was unable
to beat old team-mate
Des Courtney in the final.

in Goderich celebrated its
10th anniversary last
summer.
The tournament has
grown every year and
lastyear's was one of the
best in recent history and
ironically two old foes
fought for the cham-
pionship.
Petrolia won an un-
precedented third
straight championship in__
the tournament and again
they defeated London Ted'.
Dits,the same team they
met in the•final two years
earlier. In this year's'
tournament Petrolia,eon
the final game 4-1 on the
strength of a three -run
homer. •
Perhaps some of the
most -exciting action of
the tournament was
produced in the B
division, won by Walton.
The story of the B
divisioh and the tour-
nament was Rick
McDonald, '‘ Walton pit-
cher. McDonald almost"
.singlehandedly won the J3
.crovvti for Walton as he
turned in a remarkable
performance on the
mound and at the plate.
He pitched in all four
games his team won,
giving up but one earned
run. And in the .final
ganie Walton defeated
Wingham 14 as
McDonald hit a homer in
the bottom of the seventh.
Needless to say he was
selected as the division's
most valuable player.

three point bulge over
Canada Company.

and French for a berth in
the final.
Gords put their act
together in the final
series and disposed -of
McGees in the semi=final
in four games. Courtney
was a big factor in the
Gords success. he
-pitched " "well- in _. every
game and outduelled the
veteran, Doherty.
Gords wrapped up the
,best -of -five affair in three
straight games winning 3-
_
3-2_and 8-2 in the final
game. Courtney was
named ---most valuable
player of the playoffs.
For most of the Gords
players it was their firaf
taste of a sham '
pion§hip,
which has, been awhile
considering that Dennis
Williainson toiled with
the team for 17 •years.
