It appears the Ontario Ministry of Health is
still insisting the board at Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital have a management consultant
4 come in to assess the efficiency of various
departments at the hospital, so on Wednesday
evening, board members agreed to get some
prices from consulting firms for this work.
But board members still aren't happy about
the prospects.
"There comes a,.time when you can't afford a
bargain," said Jim Britnell, -referring to the
Ministry's suggestion that some savings could be.
- realiized through' a management study. `We've
been told the 'price 'for the study will almost equal
the grant 1de received from the Ministkry:•"
Elmer Taylor, administrator; has suggested
the firm of Hospital- Management. Services
Incorporated from London. Taylor said he un-
derstands this firm 'headed up by Gary Byrne,
formerly of University Hospital in London, will
study only special. areas including operating
room, ; out-patients, the business office, phar-
macy.
Taylor said it is his understanding the board
wishes to phase out the study over a period of
time, and added that there are various con:
sulting firms with specialized services into
certain areas of hospital management.
Bruce Potter told the board he did not like the
idea of "hiring people without knowing what the
price tag is". Since many board members
agreed, it was decided to get as many proposals
as possible before making any commitment.
At one point it was suggested the board would
be better to give the $140,000 back to the
Ministry, instead of having to bring •in
management consultants which would eat up.the
whole amount and upset the staff in the bargain.
But Taylor said the boar&just couldn't save
the money from regular operating expenses and.
give it back..It would be necessary to raise the
money from outside sources:
"There is no incentive to save money," said
Chairman Jo Berry.
Taylor said the -Ministry is now looking -into
this complaint and endeavoring to find ways and
means to correct this problem.
