office in London and had
helped to ' plan Point
Farms. As a supervisor,
she looked after main-
tenance, administration,
visitors' service and the
paper work as well as
patrolling the grounds.
We also had a small
feature on Leslie Mann,
an employee at Cham-
pion Road Machinery Co.
He had built a scale
model of the CN Tower to
be placed in the Guiness
Book of World Records
Museum in Niagara
Falls. Later on, he built a
robot but he moved back
to Toronto before I could
get a picture of it. He had
built other robots for
television commercials
while living in Toronto
before.
We also had another
small feature on Terry
Ruston, owner of Auburn
Auto Sales, who won a
third place in the post
$ war class at the Oakland
Pontiac Enthusiast
Organization's meet in
Michigan with his 1948
Pontiac Silver Streak.
AUGUST
On August 3 we carried
a story on Christina
Puccette, an 18 -year-old
student from Rome, Italy
who was in Goderich on a
Lions International
Youth Exchange. Her
host family was Mr. and
Mrs. Paul Gosse and
sons. Mr. Gosse is a
member of the Bayfield
Lions Club. Christina
noticed many differences
between the Canadian
way of life the Italian
way. Even the pizza is
different here, she said!
We also had a feature
this week on .Barbara
Murphy, wife of James
Murphy, founder and
artistic director of the
Huron. Country
Playhouse in Grand
Bend. It was sort of a
"woman behind the
man" type of feature
showing Mrs. Murphy as
a , lrife, mother, nurse,
psychologist and business
manager all rolled into
one. Her title at the
Playhouse is Director of
Operations.
On August 10, Jim
-Hagerty of the Mitchell
Advocate, who was
working out of the
Goderich office for a
month, wrote a story on
Harry Burgsma's pig
operation on the fourth
concession of Ashfield
Township. He portrayed
a clean, efficient and
fully automated
operation and proved that
"Pigs Don't Have To
Smell."
There was also a story
by W.E. Elliott in this
edition ,on John Steward
and his strawberry patch.
In the August 17 edition
there was a photo feature
on the Goderich beach by
Jim Hagerty. One can't
let the summer go by
without doing something
on the beach.
There was also a story
this week about young
people helping other
young, people. The
Benmiller Girls' Group
was holding weekly paper
drives to raise money for
their foster brother in the
Philippines and Ewen
McMahon held a
backyard carnival
against dystrophy to
raise money for research
into muscular dystrophy.
The Bluewater Centre
held its first annual
Antique Show --a big
success -- and so there
were lots of pictures from
that.
On August 24 we
carried a feature on 11 -
year -old Kim Fritzley,
the overall winner in the
11 and under group at the
We had Easter feature on Don Upthegrove, a
rabbitry Owner. He sells rabbits to processors as
broilers and to others In the bunny business as
breeding stock. He says they also make good
pets because they are clean and quiet.

career.
There was also a
feature on a garden
project at the Bluewater
Centre this week. Mary
Anne Alton was the
Junior Farmer involved
in the project. Together,
she and several residents
grew and sold vegetables
from a one acre garden at
the Centre earning
enough profit to buy more
tools and hire more
students to "work on the
project next year. The
garden reaped more than
monetary profits though.
It also reaped benefits for
the residents who worked
in the outdoors learning
new skills.
This was a busy week
and we carried a couple,
of other features too. The
Btuewater Centre held a
dog show which was
covered with pictures.
Jim Hagarty took a
fitness test in the Ontario
Government's Fitness
Van when it visited
Goderich and wrote a
humorous account of the
test and his results
- (maybe he has taken up
jogging). He also wrote a
story on Beth Haydon, 61 -
year -old husband of
councillor Elsa Hayden,
who is a member of the
London Cycling Club and
a competitive racer.
On August 31 the
Bluewater Centre was
again featured (it's a
busy place!). This time
the subject was their
annual Farm Show,
Jim Hagarty (we sure
kept him •busy) wrote a
feature on the Zubrigg
home near Saltford. This
energy efficient home
,way ;,Featur,ed;, on the,
Energy Alternatives
Tour conducted by the
Energy Conservation
Centre.
SEPTEMBER
On September 7 we did
a feature on J. Burton
Mills of Goderich who has
been raising and showing
prize poultry for over 50
years.
Jim Hagarty,who was
beginning to think he was
the animal feature editor
after doing a story on pigs
and another on skunks,
did a story on Donald the
Goose. This was a
hilarious account of a pet
goose owned by Alison
Scott of Goderich. This
goose is a lover of grape
popsicles and comedy
classic movies. He chases
cars and can shake a
webbed foot. Donald
Duck has nothing on him.
On September 14 we
carried a story on Joan
Coulter, 19 year -old -
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Coulter of Goderich,
who had spent three
weeks in Austria as part
of the Lions International
