We hope she is en- joying her retirement. The first of many historical articles by W. E. Elliott also appeared this ,week. It was on James Shaw Sinclair, Goderich lawyer and Wentworth Judge. We have had a lot of favorable comments throughout the year on Mr. Elliott's features which are read and en- joyed by many. On February 16 I in- terviewed Glen Murphy, an Australian who was living in Goderich for the year on a Rotary Club Youth Exchange. Glen was finding . Canada's cold weather a real shock to his system. He's back basking in the warm climate of his own country now with Canada and Goderich as a fond ?'memory in his mind. If he stuck to his plans, he is probably also studying to be a doctor at present. On February 23 we carried a small feature on Debbie Jeffrey, 19 - year -old daughter of Ellen and Ed Jeffrey, who had won a gold medal in dance at a figure skating event in Kincardine, the highest figure skating award one can receive. Debbie' 'is now a figure skating teacher. MARCH On March 2 there was a story on the marriage counselling services available at the Family and Children's Services (Children's Aid Society). Not too many people realize that this agency is not just for children, but for adults with problems as well and that was part of the reason for the agency's name change: On March 9 I did a story on Mrs. Frank McArthur of Goderich, an arthritis victim who has • had a total hip replacement. The story went into how 'money given to the Canadian. Arthritis Society helps people like Mrs. McArthur lead•more comfortable lives. Perhaps some day, research will find a cure for arthritis once and for all. We began doing features on. some of Goderich's many service clubs in town during the next few weeks with Dave Sykes to take on the men's clubs and me to take on the women's clubs. On March 16 I did a feature on the Kinettes Club. This auxiliary to the Kinsmen Club started in 1948, a year after the Kinsmen Club was for- med in Goderich. Mrs. D. J. (Grace) Patterson was the first president and the 1978 president, who I interviewed for the story, was Mrs. Lil Lougheed. Mrs. Patterson its still an active member of this club which tries its best to serve the community's greatest needs at all times. Dave did a feature on the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109 which. celebrated .its 50th an- niversary in 1977. Aside from providing a vital service to veterans, the Legion has grown to serve other vital needs in the community as well. The story also included a picture of Dave McMillan who served in both World Wars and has been a member of the Legion since 1927. Also on March 16 there was a story on a day -long tree trimming and cut- ting seminar sponsored by the Parks Committee of Goderich and involving the PUC, the Works and Engineering Depart- ment, Lambton College students and instructors and members of the Parks crew and board from both Southampton and Goderich... This brought us up to our Easter edition and what more appropriate features could we come . up with than one on eggs and one on rabbits. The front page featured a photo story on Victoria Public School's first annual -Great Egg Race. LESLIE HOGAN .•- CO-ORDINATOR OF SUMMERHOUSE ONE VANASTRA HOME FURNISHINGS and appliances wo have OS* large selection of... *2, 3, 4'piece Chesterfields *Corner and Sidewall China Cabinets *3 pc. coffee table sets *Bunk Beds•Lamps *Apppltance*.Antiques *Bedroom & Kitcqhen Suites *LAWN ORNAMENTS Egg mobiles, propelled by one elastic band each and built large enough to carry one egg each, were fashioned by the students out of odds and ends of material, for the,,purpose of racing in the school gym. First prize for distance went to John Freeman and first prize for novel construction went to Duane Horton. Inside, on the farm page, we had a feature on Don Upthegrove of R.R.6 Goderich who had been operating a rabbit farm for about a year and a half at that time. He sells his rabbits to processors as friers and also to other farmers as young breeding stock. He also says they make good pets as they are clean and quiet and live to the age of six or seven. I noticed an ad in the paper a little while ago which indicates that Mr. Upthegrove is still in the bunny business. On March 30 there was , a feature, illustrated with photos, on the 30 Huron', County residents who took the oath of Canadian Citizenship at a Citizenship Court held in Goderich. The 30 included town councillor Stan Profit and his wife Francis. Mr. Elliott also had a feature ip this edition on Young'sSchool USS 3 in Colborne Township APRIL April 6 featured a whole page`answering questions about the teacher's strike which was going on in the county at the time and was uppermost in everyone's mind. There was also a feature that week on the Ladies' Legion Auxiliary. I interviewed Mona Davis, then the president of the auxiliary, and found out 'that the auxiliary; which was formed in June of 1947, served the Legion, the veteran and the com- munity in many ways. There is also a special comradeship about that group too. We called April, the month to control the big killers. We had pictures of the annual Daffodil tea sponsored by the Goderich Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society and a story on Traffic Safety Month. An in- terview with Goderich Police Chief, Pat King showed that there had been no fatal car ac- cidents in Goderich during the year. The' biggest cause of ac- cidents, Chief King said, was inattentive driving or not adapting to hazardous conditions. Clarence MacDonald, Arlene Whiteman of Goderich was featured in the paper in November. She makes old fashioned dolls out of porcelain. She does it all, from constructing the moulds to designing the clothes. There was also a pic- ture of Captain Jean- notte, who was the captain of the first ship into Goderich Harbor in 1978. This ship was the Agawa Canyon. On April ,2,0 -there was a feature by W. E. On April 27 there was a feature on , Goderich's fourth annual Arbor Day celebration, a day set aside for the planting and appreciation of trees. There was also a feature on the tw6 I.O.D.E. Chapters in. Goderich. I interviewed Grace Neville, Regent of the Ahmeek Chapter and Doreen Garrow, Regent of the Maple Leaf- Chapter. The Ahmeek Chapter, which takes its name from the Chippewa Indian word meaning Harold Bettger retired this year after teaching '20 years at G.D.C.I. Here he is presented with a plaque by student council president, Karen Donnelly on behalf of the student body. -Sis o Beaver, is the third oldest I.O.D.E. Chapter in Ow Doininion, It was founded in, 1901 by Mrs. Dan MacDonald and has a claim to fame of establishing the first hospital in the county. The Maple Leaf Chapter was formed as a junior chapter in 1901 with 12 members ranging in age from 10 to 12. Shortly before World War I, it became a senior chapter. Both chapters are going strong today. Also on April 27 there was a picture off the G.D.C.I.
